Machine Tune-Up Special

You may not have noticed just how noisy and lint-filled your machine has become.  And perhaps you didn’t realize how much this affects its performance.  Give your machine a little tender loving care this month, taking advantage of our machine care special.  From April 13th through April 30th only, routine care will be $49.95!!! (Our regular maintenance care is $90).  Regular rates apply to major problems and replacement parts.

Spring Block Swap

In a block swap, you make a beautiful block in an agreed upon “look”.  You bring in to Capital Quilts the blocks that you are willing to share with other quilters, and in exchange, you will receive blocks from other quilters equal to the number you turned in for the swap.  Our last swap in the fall was a blazing success!  Quilters agreed that it was really fun, that it enlarged the number of fabrics they could use without causing them to buy more fabric, and it amused them to see the interplay of fabrics they wouldn’t have thought of.

Nina Graves has agreed to manage another block swap—and it is a particularly beautiful one!  Using subtle batiks and curved forms like the Drunkard’s path block, you will be able to make your own quilt quickly and easily. Come and see Nina's finished sample in the shop

Think curved seams are difficult?  Not these!  Nina will give a free demo of the technique at the signup session for the event, Sunday, April 27 at 3 pm.  Participation in the swap will cost $18.  It includes a Lucite template set, a fat quarter of batik to get started, the introductory lesson on the technique and rules of the swap.  You will turn in your completed blocks by Sunday, June 1, and receive your swap blocks on Thursday, June 5, between 7 and 9 pm.  There are a million ways to set the bocks.  Be part of the fun and excitement in creating your own version.  Many of the Capital Quilts staff will be exchanging as well because we love the project AND the process.  Join us!

Sew for Sick Kids Tea Party

On Saturday, May 31, Capital Quilts will host a tea party with a dual purpose: have fun sewing and sipping with your hostess Pat Vasaio, and produce cheery pillowcases for sick kids at Children’s Hospital.  Cost to join the activity is $5.00.

We invite you to bring fabric from your stash, though kits will be available for $8.00.  Sign up for one of the following sessions:

There will be one lucky winner of a fabric prize per session!

2008 Club News

Buck a Block Club

This year, the “Buck a Block” Club has taken a slightly different turn: all the staff members participated in making the individual blocks, and we're so accomplished that they were pretty much all the same size! We decided to try a year of solids (this is really the new thing, ladies, so be here on the cutting edge with us!) augmented by a finishing kit of a bold floral. We just love the look, and expect that you will, too. There is a little more room for individual expression than in past years, as you can easily enlarge the quilt by adding extra blocks of whatever color strikes your fancy. If you choose our finishing kit, you will be making a quilt up to 80” square.

Here's how it works:

-Every month, pick up a kit with fabric sufficient for one 8” block. The kit assumes you will be using Thangles, a paper foundation method that ensures accuracy and consistency. The charge is $1.00. Additional kits are $3.00 each.

-There will be additional fat quarters of the month's color available should you wish to make more blocks for another, or larger quilt.

-At the end of the year you will have 12 different blocks, ready to put into a finished quilt. You may use the Capital Quilts setting (complete with instructions) designed by our own Annette Burns, or you may choose your own setting.

-Finishing kits are available now, for as long as they last. The kit includes ivory background and floral print for star points, border and binding, and a royal blue separate narrow inner border. The cost is $58.95.

-If by some mischance, you fail to pick up the block kit within the month, the price for that kit will be $3.00 in the next month.

-There is a free class in the use of Thangles on Monday, January 14, 7-9 pm. This will get you up and running right away. Please let us know that you intend to join the buck a block club so that we will cut your kit in advance. Let us know, too, if you intend to take the free Thangles class, so we can be ready.

The Sewing Circle

Capital Quilts is continuing its second Saturday of the month program in 2008. This year we are very pleased to point out that we have added a delightful change to the program: we will include guest speakers who will show you a bit of the technique for which they are well known, talk about their work process, and show you some of their recent finished projects. Where appropriate, we will hang a trunk show of their favorite works. Although we are generally quilt focused, many of you have expressed interest in garment construction and home dec techniques as well. Since we are all sewers and persons of a sharing disposition, this is a chance to enlarge our horizons a bit, while continuing the features we enjoy so much. We will have sprightly conversation, new techniques, show and tell of members' work, and many door prizes. We will continue to meet at 9:00 am on the second Saturday of the month. There is a yearly fee of $24.

Thimbleberries Club

If you love sophisticated country colors---burgundy, hunter green, smoky blue and gold, for example, you'll love the Thimbleberries line of fabric. It's never trendy, acid or cold. Instead, it embodies the essence of quilting: comfortable, and appealing. Designer Lynette Jensen comes up with a major project each year, augmented by a series of smaller projects and suggestions for group activities. Our leaders for this coming year are Pat Vasaio and Donna Gemeny–and you can be quite sure that they will not leave it at the preplanned level! Never! They have activities for you that will keep you guessing, keep you laughing, keep you creating for the whole year. Everyone is welcome to join. We generally meet on the last Saturday of the month at 9:00 am. The charge for the year is $40, and includes the four quarterly books of projects and instructions for the one large quilt. Capital Quilts will be kitting the quarterly projects. Reserve one quarterly project (or all of them) now. Be sure to join soon, as enrollment is limited to 60.
