The Art of Boro Stitching
- Jul 21, 2018 01:30 pm

Derived from the Japanese boroboro, meaning something tattered or repaired, boro refers to the practice of reworking and repairing textiles (often clothes or bedding) through piecing, patching and stitching, in order to extend their use. It is associated with the indigo-dyed hemp clothing traditional in Japan before the introduction of cotton. Worn areas of cloth are patched over or older garments cut up and joined, with running stitches or areas of sashiko (running stitches sewn through layers of fabric), used for reinforcement and to quilt layers of cloth together.

- Jul 22, 2018 12:00 pm

The challenge is to use that picture as an inspiration for a quilt measuring 20” x 20”. You can recreate the picture, or use it as a starting point for something entirely different. For example, if the picture evokes an emotion in you, you could make a quilt that reflects that. If it’s a picture of the ocean, you could make a fish quilt. If there is a theme in the picture that appeals to you, you could make a quilt about that. We are going to include the kids, too. There will be prizes for different age groups.

During the first part of this class, we will begin constructing the border units (see Pre-class preparation below). In the second part of class, we’ll create a panel with the 2 ½” strips using improv piecing, trace the dog (cat) pattern and fuse it onto that panel. Then we’ll see a demo of the applique and talk about finishing the quilt.

Rag Basket
- Aug 16, 2018 10:30 am

“Rag Basket” may be a misleading name for these lovely bowls! Rag bowls have been made since the beginning of time, it seems. They have found some form of bowls that are wrapped into a coil in many archeological digs, that go back for centuries. In more recent history, rag bowls were made in Appalachia along with rag rugs that were known to hold up over time. Rag bowls are sturdy, versatile and fun to make. This class will provide instructions for making a small bowl and hopefully have you leaving with your bowl and all you need to make more. Be careful - it is addictive, but if you are a quilter and/or sewing "nut", you know all about that!!! One very good thing is that it allows you to use up scraps of material that you might otherwise just have sitting around the house.

Rag Basket
- Sep 20, 2018 02:00 pm
