Second Saturday Club  2025

In 2025, the Second Saturday Club is going to explore color, technique and creativity. We will be making two projects this year:  Ode to Mary Blair, pattern by Corinne Sovey Design Studio and Vitamin Sea, pattern by Swirly Girls.  Both projects are suitable for the confident beginner.  The more advanced quilter will be able to challenge themselves by learning new techniques, pattern and size adjustment and playing with color.

The first session in January will go over the calendar and what will be covered each month.  The initial project will be the Ode to Mary Blair quilt.  It is made with (26) blocks of which (15) are unique.  Several of the blocks are duplicated.  Of the given blocks, (4) are traditionally pieced blocks, (9) are applique blocks and (2) are foundation paper pieced blocks.   Each month, the session will demonstrate tricks and tips to construct the assigned blocks as well as options for your consideration. It is your quilt, your choice of techniques. Applique will cover turned edge applique both by machine and hand as well as raw edge applique.  Foundation paper piecing will be taught with the pattern pages as well as the freezer paper method. There are some other additional techniques that will be covered, such as adding sashing, borders and maybe some embellishment to the quilt top for you to make the quilt of your choice.

The second project is the Vitamin Sea quilt.  Emphasis will be placed on traditional piecing to form multiple triangles throughout the quilt.  This pattern uses the Creative Grids™ 45o  Kaleidoscope & Dresden Plate Ruler to form the “A” and “B” blocks .  By strategically placing the blocks, additional designs emerge making it an interesting process.  Color theory will be discussed to maximize the design elements of the quilt.

The Second Saturday Club will do these projects over 12 months: 1) planning, fabric choices and cutting; 2) traditional block piecing, applique and foundation paper piecing; 3) layout and design wall; 4) quilt top assembly; 5) quilting curves and straight-line designs with a walking foot: and 6) binding and labeling. The monthly program also provides information on current and upcoming quilt shows, classes at Capital Quilts and other learning opportunities.  The morning is capped off with a Show and Tell presentation, everybody’s favorite part, when we get to see and be inspired by the talent of the group.  Join us for Second Saturday Club and making Ode to Mary Blair and the Vitamin Sea quilts.
