What's New at CQ 4/20/17

"On Earth Day, we celebrate all the gifts the world and nature make available to us. We recognize our complete dependence on its bounty. And we acknowledge the need for good stewardship to preserve its fruits for future generations."  John Hoeven

Dear Members of My Favorite Sewing Community,

Almost all of the Cut the Deck Challenge card quilts have come into the shop and they are wonderful! We are going to hang them in the Gallery today. Please stop by sometime between the 21st and the 29th to see them and vote for your favorites. We’ll announce the winners at the Card Party on April 30, 12-1. If you haven’t gotten your quilt back to us yet, don’t despair! Please bring it in as soon as you can. We really want to get all of the quilts so that we can get the deck printed, and late is lots better than never!

We are looking forward to vending at the Friendship Star Quilters quilt show at the Gaithersburg Fairgrounds on April 28-30. We will have the Heavenly Seating chairs there for you to try, and we will be offering a 10% discount on purchases of the chairs during the show. These chairs are custom made for you and ergonomically terrific. You will be much more comfortable while you sew. Please come and have a seat!

Barbara Bregman is teaching “Lucky” this Saturday, 1-4. She will show you how to use the Quick Curve Ruler and present a trunk show that demonstrates the different looks you can achieve with the ruler. (The quilts, of course, are all beautifully quilted, as Barbara is a quilter extraordinaire!) You’ll start your own Lucky quilt to get practice using the ruler. Treat yourself to a fun afternoon with Barbara. Sign up today!

I have been something of a tree hugger all my life. I relish, respect and admire Mother Nature. Our world would be so much poorer without the flowers and trees, the birds and the bees. When I travel to new places, I always look for the city parks, the garden tours, the nature hikes. I am happiest in a garden, or standing on the beach at sunrise, or walking through the woods with the sun’s dappled light filtering through the trees and the birdsong filling the air. This Saturday is Earth Day. I hope you will take a moment to reflect on our Planet and the importance of preserving and protecting it for ourselves and our children and our children’s children.

George Washington University Museum and the Textile Museum are hosting the traveling Ebony Fashion Fair exhibit now through July 24. In addition to displays of clothing, 50 years’ worth of Ebony Magazine covers adorn the walls. The Ebony Fashion Fair was begun in the 1950’s as a fundraiser for a hospital in New Orleans and grew from there, exposing black fashion to the world. It wasn’t always easy, as you can imagine. Visit the show to learn more!
