Dear Fabric Fanatics,
Good things are happening this weekend at Capital Quilts!
Friday, 5-9, come for Sit ‘n’ Stitch! Bring your own project and supplies to work on along with some food to share with the group. Capital Quilts provides the beverages. FREE
Saturday is our third Blue Bag 5th Saturday Sale. If you are the proud owner of a Capital Quilts Blue Bag and a Green 5th Saturday Club Ticket, come shop and save 20% on all the fabric and pre-cuts you can stuff in your bag. You can buy a Blue Bag and a Green Ticket before Saturday but not on Saturday! Other vendors in the Gaither Center will be having a HUGE TENT SALE the same day -- you won't want to miss out!
Saturday afternoon from 2-5, Barbara Bregman is teaching “Quilt as Desired”. Barbara explains how she approaches a quilt to come up with a plan for quilting it. She’ll show examples of edge-to-edge, custom, and heirloom quilting. Bring one of your own tops, and she and the group will think about it with you and come up with some ideas for quilting it.
Jennifer McClanahan comes on Sunday at 3:30 to entertain us with a Trunk Show. Jennifer is a pattern designer. Her company is the Sweet Tea Pattern Co. She’s told me she is going to debut two brand new patterns at the Trunk Show! Jennifer will also be teaching one of her quilts, “Looking Glass”, on October 17.
The Quarterly Newsletter is now available online and in the shop. All of the classes and other events for October, November, and December are listed. Don’t miss next week’s classes! On Monday, Barbara Kascic is teaching a new coat pattern, the Sophia Swing Coat. Lined or unlined, it will be perfect for cooler autumn days. Stylish, too! Next Saturday, October 7, enjoy the Zentangle: Beginner’s Workshop in the morning. Saturday afternoon, the first meeting of the Dance of the Dragonflies quilt class meets at 2pm.
Go ‘n’ Piece,
Alison

Barbara Bregman is teaching her popular “Quilt as Desired” on Saturday, September 30 from 2-5. Barbara explains how she approaches a quilt to come up with a plan for quilting it. She’ll show examples of edge-to-edge, custom, and heirloom quilting. Bring one of your own tops, and she and the group will think about it with you and come up with some ideas for quilting it.
Does your sewing machine need a Spa Day? Make an appointment for this Sunday, October 1st, and Bruce will carefully tend to all of your machine's routine needs.
Jennifer McClanahan comes on Sunday, October 1st at 3:30 to entertain us with a Trunk Show. Jennifer is a pattern designer. Her company is the Sweet Tea Pattern Co. She’s told me she is going to debut two brand new patterns at the Trunk Show! Jennifer will also be teaching one of her quilts, “Looking Glass”, on October 17.
The Sophia Swing Coat features raglan sleeves and back yoke for a sophisticated style. Add some fun buttons for a customized look! Monday, October 2 at 10:30am.
If you'll be quilting your own quilt, but don't have the room in your house to properly sandwich it, make an appointment for Sandwich Day on Tuesday, October 3rd. Your registration fee buys you the use of the classroom for an hour and a staff member to help you get the sandwiching done! Please note that your top and back should be complete and pressed before you arrive. Capital Quilts does not provide basting supplies for free, but 505 Spray and/or safety pins are available for purchase. We do not assist with thread basting.
Do you love the look of Zentangle, but don't know how to achieve it? Let Pat Dee guide you through the basics in Zentangle for Beginners on Saturday, October 7 at 10:30am.
Dance of the Dragonflies starts on Saturday, October 7 at 2:00pm. The dragonfly totem carries the wisdom of transformation and adaptability in life and is connected to the symbolism of change and light. This beautiful and unusual dragonfly wall hanging is made by machine appliqueing the dragonflies onto a panel called “Supernova”. The dragonflies come as a kit. Make yours round as Julie has, or square. You might use it as the medallion of a larger quilt. Kits and panels are available through Capital Quilts.
Round out your weekend with Zentangle: Painting on Fabric. Create your own ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art), then color it in using the tools Pat provides.
Because Capital Quilts Cares: Fellow quilter Andrea Mitchell is collecting baby quilts for a baby shower to be given for a group of pregnant veterans whose husbands are deployed and away from home. If you would like to donate a baby quilt for this event, please bring it to Capital Quilts not later than October 7.
Pierce Mill, located at 2539 Tilden St. NW, in Rock Creek Park, is the last remaining mill in Washington, DC. Friends of Pierce Mill have set October 14 as Heritage Day. Step back in time and witness the 19th century, four-story grist mill grind corn into meal, powered by a giant water wheel. Heritage Day activities are from 10-4. Milling demonstrations will take place from 11-2. There will also be hands-on activities for children, live bluegrass music, and other exhibitions, including hand quilting. Pierce Mill is seeking a small group of hand quilters to give a demonstration. Please contact Steve Dryden at jsdryden@comcast.net or by phone at 301-512-5899 if you are interested in participating in this fun day.
