What's New at CQ 4/19/18

"If human beings are perceived as potentials rather than problems, as possessing strengths instead of weaknesses, as unlimited rather that dull and unresponsive, then they thrive and grow to their capabilities." Barbara Bush

Dear Friends of Fabric,

“Cut Time. Quilt More.” That is the AccuQuilt motto! Using a GO! AccuQuilt cutting machine is up to 90% faster than cutting with a rotary cutter! It’s perfect for turning scraps into usable pieces and creating scrappy quilts. Smash the Stash! Find out more and see a trunk show of quilts on June 22 and 23 at one of our AccuQuilt GO! event sessions. Attend one of three sessions. There are two on Friday, at 10:30 and 2:30 and another on Saturday morning at 10:30. Each is 2 hours long. Pay $10 to register and get a $10 Capital Quilts Gift Card at the event. Sign up today, online, by phone, or at the shop. Bring a friend! We look forward to seeing you at the event!

A note on our class cancellation policies: If you find you can’t, or don’t want, to attend a class you have registered for, please let us know at least 8 days before the class. Cancellations made within 7 days of a class cannot be refunded; if you can find a friend to take the class in your stead, that is fine. If you cancel more than 7 days out, we will issue you a store credit in the amount you paid for the class. As always, if Capital Quilts is the one to cancel a class, we will refund your fee in full in the manner in which you paid for it. Thank you for understanding!

NEW & NOTEWORTHY

We have new bolts from the Kaffe Collective!  Just five of 25 are pictured here.  $12.99/yard.

Attention Alison Glass fans!  New Insignia colors are here in all of their colorful glory.  $12.50/yard.

Soft Fuse is back in stock; choose from pre-packs (3yd. x 18", $20; 10 sheets 8" x 9", $10) or by the 37" wide yard, 11.59/yard.  If you haven't used Soft Fuse before, give it a try -- it'll change your applique game!  Soft Fuse Premium is so soft that needles, both hand and machine, just glide right through. Draw on paper side, roughly cut out shapes, fuse to applique fabric, closely cut out drawn shapes, then remove paper and position pieces in order and fuse onto background fabric. Finish edges with your favorite stitch.

The NEW SCHMETZ Super Nonstick Needle has a slippery surface that ensures less adhesive residue sticks to the needle. Features A Super Universal Needle with a non-stick coating of NIT (Nickel-Phosphor-PTFE). Extra-large eye is suitable for embroidery work. The eye corresponds to a needle two sizes larger (i.e., the 70/10 Non Stick eye is similar to a size 90/14 regular Universal eye). Distinctive scarf with the special design of the eye ensures prevention of skipped stitches. Slightly rounded point provides trouble-free sewing on most materials. Strong conical blade reinforcement easily handles thick fabrics like denim.  4 sizes available, $5.49/5pk.

The Textile Artist Small Art Quilts:  This inspiring book guides the reader through Deborah's creative and inventive textile work: from painting fabrics and building textures to embellishing with hand and machine stitching. This book contains a wealth of inspiration for any textile artist, showing them how to create gorgeous, textured pieces of art.  MSRP $29.95, CQ price only $25.46.

CLASSES

Have Fun with Free Motion! Tired of stitching in the ditch? This class is built around the premise that ANYONE can become competent at free motion quilting, but that almost EVERYONE needs a good deal of practice to gain the confidence needed to actually start quilting. In this class, we will PRACTICE. Let's try some other patterns and techniques! We'll explore meandering fillers using stencils and more. Some previous experience with free motion quilting is required. Karen Fricke teaches, Friday, 4/20 at 1:30pm.

Attention longarmers! If you've got the basics of ProStitcher Premium down, ProStitcher Premium: The Next Steps will teach you how to design at the frame, including edge to edge, block placement, borders, and effective yet simple custom quilting. Everyone will have the opportunity to try the techniques. Friday, 4/20, 6pm.

Bruce, our machine technician, is coming to the shop on Sunday, 4/22.  Make an appointment for him clean and tune up your sewing machine. All brands are welcome.

Novelty Collage:  Have you ever made a collage, perhaps with pictures of your children or a vacation, or in art class when you were in school? You can make collages with fabric, too! Instead of cut-and-paste, it's cut-and-sew, then add details with thread, beads, lace, or whatever strikes your fancy. Karen Fricke teaches on Monday, 4/23 at 1:30pm.

Quilting by hand is immensely satisfying and a terrific stress-reliever. Not only that, others will ooh and aah over your beautiful quilt. Put on your favorite music or a book tape and find your quilting Zen. Chris will show you how to mark your fabric, what needles, thread, and thimbles to use, and how to do the stitches. A state of peace and a beautiful quilt are in your future!  Handquilting: The Ultimate Finish is being offered on Tuesday, 4/24 at 10:30am.

Don't have enough room in your house to easily sandwich a quilt? Bring your top backing batting and supplies to CQ and we will help you sandwich that quilt in no time!  ONE appointment is still available for Sandwich Day on Tuesday 4/24.

If you've got the basics of free motion quilting down, and want to learn more complex quilting designs, this is the class for you! Karen will talk about borders, sashing, fillers, feathers, and more.  Take More Fun With Free Motion with Karen Fricke on Friday, 4/27 at 1:30pm.

Bring your machine, handwork, a new project or an old project, perhaps some food to share, or just come to talk and have fun with other quilters. Capital Quilts will provide beverages and have staffers on hand to assist you in any way they can. Our FREE Sit 'N' Sew happens on Friday, 4/27, 5-9.

Ready to rent a longarm?  Before you do, you'll need to take Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm on 4/27 at 6pm.  Learn the ins and outs of the longarm machine and the frame, how to set up for quilting a quilt, what proper tension is, and some basic quilting designs.

Liz wants to share her love of wool with you in Intro to Wool Embroidery! Wool is hot in more than one sense of the word; find out how to create some of the beautiful stitches that are used to embellish wool applique on Saturday, 4/28 at 1:30pm.

If you have a Janome, why not sign up to have Marianne clean and oil your machine on Sunday, 4/29?

Ginny Brown teaches Love Links on Sunday, 4/29 at 12:30.  Love Links is a Modern 180 pattern designed by Running with Scissor Quilters. The "links" are created by assembling traditional flying geese into Chevron blocks using two geese in reverse colors. Once the blocks are interlocked, links pop out to create this stunning quilt! This quick and easy quilt can be made in eight different sizes using only the Wing Clipper I.

BLUE BAG BONANZA

The April prize is a Dream Fusible Batting by Quilter’s Dream, 60” x 46”. It is made with 80% high grade long staple USA cotton fiber blended with 20% fine denier poly microfiber for a soft, silky batting that drapes beautifully and breathes well. The long staple cotton fiber reduces shrinkage and adds stability so that the stitches can be up to 8” apart. The poly microfibers add a loft and resistance to creases/wrinkles. There are no scrims, glues, or other binders to resist the needle, so this fine batting can be hand or machine quilted with ease.

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.

Sign up for our 5th Saturday Club! Purchase your Gold Tag for $10 and be able to participate in special sales on each of the four 5th Saturdays on 2018.

Our thanks to everybody who shops at Capital Quilts and who participates in the Blue Bag Bonanza.
