What's New at CQ 4/26/18

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world." Robin Williams

Dear Fabric Fiends,

Oops, I mean “friends”!

Lost something? Next time you are in the shop, check out our lost and found drawer. You might get a pleasant surprise. Hint: put your name on EVERYTHING you bring to a class or event: coat, ruler, phone, keys, scissors, rotary cutter, mat….When it gets left behind, we’ll know whom to contact!

The Friendship Star Quilt Guild will have quilts on display in our Gallery now through the end of May. Currently hanging are quilts made for a challenge, that will ultimately be donated to charitable causes. Friendship Star is a local guild, meeting the first Monday of every month at the Church of the Nazarene on Warfield Road in Gaithersburg. To learn more about this active guild, visit www.friendshipstar.org. They welcome new members!

Coming soon to your favorite quilt shop: the AccuQuilt GO! system of cutting accurately and speedily. You will have a lot more time to sew not only because you’ll be spending less time cutting, but because your sewing will be more accurate and you’ll spend less time ripping seams out. I like the sound of that! Attend one of our introductory GO! sessions on June 22 & 23 to learn more. An AccuQuilt educator will be here to show us the ropes and share a trunk show with us. Sign up online, in the shop, or by calling us at 301-527-0598.

Have you registered to get the Quilters’ Quest newsletter yet? There is a free Project of the Month pattern as well as info about the Quest and what is happening in the Quest shops. And don’t forget to sign up for one of our two buses! It’s a relaxing two days of quilt shops, friends, and food (lunch and snacks are provided) while someone else does all the driving. Register by May first and pay $125; after May 1, pay $150. Cancellations can be made through September 1 for a full refund.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

Insignia is a new concept for AG fabrics. It is a “near solid” fabric line. They are beautiful, saturated fabrics that coordinate with other AG printed fabrics and walk the line between solid and print. Tiny signature motifs float here and there on a background of high quality Andover fabric, allowing the texture of the weave to show subtly as an element of the design. These are sure to become useful coordinates, as well as lovely stand alone fabrics.  We've put together 2-1/2" strip sets ($42.99 each) and 5" charm squares ($10.99 each) for you from these 20 luscious colors.

Stunning color and vivid details await in this gorgeous collection of floral fantasy. Violets, purples and periwinkles with accents of mint and pink are fashionable and fresh. The richness of the deep hues are complimented nicely with light and airy prints. Jacqueline from Quilting Treasures, $12.50/yard.

New pattern!  Curry from Madison Cottage Designs measures 72" square.  It's fast, fun, and fat quarter friendly.  $10.00 each.

Liz wants to share her love of wool with you in Intro to Wool Embroidery! Wool is hot in more than one sense of the word; find out how to create some of the beautiful stitches that are used to embellish wool applique on Saturday, 4/28 at 1:30pm.

Ginny Brown teaches Love Links on Sunday, 4/29 at 12:30. Love Links is a Modern 180 pattern designed by Running with Scissor Quilters. The "links" are created by assembling traditional flying geese into Chevron blocks using two geese in reverse colors. Once the blocks are interlocked, links pop out to create this stunning quilt! This quick and easy quilt can be made in eight different sizes using only the Wing Clipper I.

Phyliss loves whipping up Bridget's Bagettes!  These are speedy little bags with an easy edge finish—no binding, no fuss! Keep all of life’s little necessities where you can easily find them. Clear vinyl window lets you see what's inside! Monday, 4/30 at 1pm.

Between Friends sports a very uniquely shaped design in the blocks. To me it looks like the blocks are holding hands. There is plenty of negative space for some fun quilting opportunities! Fat quarter friendly, or use 1/8 yards for a scrappier look.  The pattern designer herself, Jennifer McClanahan, teaches on Sunday, May 6 at 12:30pm.

Bruce has two cleaning appointments available on Sunday 5/6.  Call to reserve one today!

Capital Quilts is honored to host a free sewing session for The Duffel Project on Monday, 5/7 at 10am.  When a child enters the foster care system and must be relocated from their home they are given a plastic garbage bag for their belongings if they don’t have a suitcase of their own. No child should have to equate their belongings with trash, so the American Sewing Guild decided to do what they do best – sew. With guidance from the Department of Social Services, a sturdy, somewhat-easy-to-make bag was designed, and the members of the Maryland Chapter started sewing their little hearts out. As of December 2017, the members of the Maryland Chapter of the ASG have sewn and delivered over 600 duffel bags to children in Foster Care.

BLUE BAG BONANZA

The April prize is a Dream Fusible Batting by Quilter’s Dream, 60” x 46”. It is made with 80% high grade long staple USA cotton fiber blended with 20% fine denier poly microfiber for a soft, silky batting that drapes beautifully and breathes well. The long staple cotton fiber reduces shrinkage and adds stability so that the stitches can be up to 8” apart. The poly microfibers add a loft and resistance to creases/wrinkles. There are no scrims, glues, or other binders to resist the needle, so this fine batting can be hand or machine quilted with ease.

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.

Sign up for our 5th Saturday Club! Purchase your Gold Tag for $10 and be able to participate in special sales on each of the four 5th Saturdays on 2018.

Our thanks to everybody who shops at Capital Quilts and who participates in the Blue Bag Bonanza.
