What's New at CQ 05/31/18

"Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong." Ella Fitzgerald

Dear Sewalicious friends,

It’s time for the Quilters Unlimited Quilt Show again! Come see us in booth 406 this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly VA. And if you can’t make that show, come see us at the Annapolis Quilt Guild show the following weekend, June 9 and 10, at the Annapolis High School, 2700 Riva Road. We enjoy doing these shows and look forward to seeing old friends and new.

It’s not too late to join the summer sewing challenge, “Do You See What I See?” Come to the shop to get a rules sheet and pick your inspirational picture. We have three categories with prizes in each: All Quilters, Kids Under 18, and CQ Teachers/Staff. Finished quilts are just 20” x 20”, due on July 22nd. You can do this and have a whale of a good time! There is a $5 registration fee. Top prize for All Quilters and Teachers/Staff is a $50 Capital Quilts Gift Card; top prize for Kids Under 18 is a $30 CQ Gift Card.

Get GO!ing on June 22 and 23 at our AccuQuilt GO! event. Come to one of three sessions to find out how this marvelous cutting system can make your sewing life ‘sew’ much easier! There is a morning session each day at 10:30, and Friday afternoon there is a session at 2:30. Register today!

Announcing a new Block-of-the-Month! Vintage Holiday is a six-month BOM that will meet the 2nd Monday of each month beginning July 9, 10-12. Anne Brill is your guide. Look for details next week.

Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing may be the most comprehensive guide to English paper piecing on the market today, including history of the craft, artist profiles, and more! Patterns for original rosettes on which to learn the practicalities of EPP are shown step-by-step, covering everything from templates, paper choice, magic mirrors, how to mock up layouts, glue/thread basting, and more. Finished examples exemplifying mastery of the skills learned in the book & unique secondary designs within the quilts that demonstrate the fussy cut and rosette piecing techniques.  Author Florence Knapp explores of the craft over a series of interviews and a journey back in time. She captures the elements that make it so much more than a simple technique guide, giving meaning to the act of English paper piecing for those who are intrigued as well as to quilters who are already hooked. As if that isn't enough, there's icing on the teacakes in the form of original paper-pieced rosettes and show stopping quilt patterns included to practice and show off your EPP skills.  MSRP $24.99, CQ price only $21.24.

CLASSES

The first class in June is a Quilt of Valor event, 2-5 on Saturday, June 2. There are 4 seats open.

Get a jump on Christmas and make a tree skirt in Slice of Christmas on June 5, 12-5. This class will be offered again on July 24; hopefully our new holiday fabrics will have arrived by then.

Rainbow Swirls is a Log Cabin quilt with a twist! The curved effect is created by using different sizes of strips in each block. No curved piecing required. Hilary shows you how on Thursday, June 7 at 10.

If you would like to rent the HQ Simply Sixteen to finish your own quilt, or if you want to know more about the machine before buying one, take the Getting Started: the Simply Sixteen class with Annette, 10:30 am on Friday, June 8.

June 8 is also Sandwich Night. Make an appointment with Carol to layer and baste your quilt top, back, and batting. If you or someone else is going to do the quilting on a longarm machine, you do not need to sandwich the quilt.

If you’ve taken the basic ProStitcher class and want to know more, take ProStitcher: the Next Steps on Saturday, June 9, at 1. Beth Morningstar is teaching.

There are 6 seats left in the Brimfield block class on Sunday, June 10, at 2pm. The class is being taught by the block’s designers, Kim Martucci and Nisha Bouri. This is an English Paper Piecing class, suitable for all skill levels.
