What's New at CQ 7/5/18

"Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal." John F. Kennedy

Dear HOT Sewists,

Please welcome Charles Cox to the staff.  Charles is our newest sewing machine technician.  He will be in the shop on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11-3. Bring your machine or serger in for some TLC!  If you would like to make an appointment with Charles, call 301-527-0598.

The Newsletter for the classes we are offering during these hot summer months is now online.  Be cool, and stay cool, by taking a class here at the shop.  It’s fun to sew with others, to swap stories and hints and learn something new together.  When I teach, I always learn something new from my students; it is definitely a two-way experience.  There is lots to choose from: quilts, crafts, techniques, lectures, machine use, and more.  And it is never too late to join a club: we prorate your fee through the end of the year.  Sign up online, in the shop, or by phone at 301-527-0598.  Bring your friends!

Introducing a new club: the AccuQuilt GO! Club!  This is a club for owners of the AccuQuilt GO! machines.  Liz Brodsky will be your fearless leader.  She will review basic techniques and teach you more advanced ones.  There will be lots of sharing and, of course, show-and-tell.  There will be projects and challenges, inspiration and creativity.  We begin on August 28, 1-3 and will meet thereafter on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 1-3. The pro-rated registration fee for August 2018 is $30.

If you’ve just purchased an AccuQuilt GO! machine and want to know more about the details of using it, take the Two by Two class with Debra Ball.  You’ll learn about the importance of straight-of-grain, how to position your die, how to put the fabric on the die for the most efficient cutting, and how to take care of your machine and the dies.  You will also make a quilt with the fabrics you cut.  Skill level: beginner on up.

Be sure to go to the AccuQuilt website and sign up for their newsletter. Stay up to date on the latest and greatest as well as specials being offered. Capital Quilts will offer the same specials…and you won’t have to pay shipping! If what you want is not in stock, I will order it for you.  Support your local quilt shop!

I also want to point out Rae Cumbie’s class, Surface Design Fun. It will be just like summer camp!  Spend a day with Rae as she introduces you to her favorite surface design techniques for clothing.  Try out Sheva Paint sticks and raw edge collage.   See examples of how beads and buttons bring clothing to life.  Bring solid cottons in various weights and prints with large scale motifs if you like.  Throw in some clothing with spots or holes that need a new life.  A small kit fee will include the tools you need to have a playful day.  And while Rae has aimed this class at garment sewers, because that is what she does, I see no reason why quilters can’t take this class and apply the same techniques to quilts.  Class meets on Thursday, July 19, 10-4.  I predict this will be one of the most fun things you do this summer!

Quilters’ Quest is 106 days away!  Don’t miss out on riding the bus with us; sign up today! For just $150, you get a light breakfast, lunch, water, snacks, entertainment, a “bus mom (or dad)” to take care of all the paperwork and make your experience the best, and, best of all, we do all the driving while you relax on a luxury coach.  You will spend about an hour in each shop.  We are offering two bus trips:  #1 on October 19 & 20, and #2 on October 22 & 23.

Row by Row “Sew Musical” is underway. Our row is called “The Kennedy Center” and we have both kits and patterns. As you visit different quilt shops this summer, take a look around. If they have something or do something you think you’d like to see at Capital Quilts, let me know! I am always open to new ideas.  Since 2011, Row by Row Experience has engaged tens of thousands of quilters all over the world with the fun of collecting free row patterns while visiting local quilt shops, then creating themed quilt projects using the rows they collect. Visit quilt shops between today and September 4. Each shop will give you a free pattern for its row; many will also offer kits for sale, which will include the pattern. If you are so inclined, create a quilt using at least 8 rows from 8 different shops. Quilt it, bind it, and label it, and take it to a participating quilt shop. If you are the first to submit a quilt, you will win a prize of 25 fat quarters! If one of the rows in your quilt is from that shop, the shop will give you a second prize. See complete program details at www.rowbyrowexperience.com.

It is nearly time for Rod’s Sharpening Service to return to us.  He will be here on July 18.  Bring your scissors, pinking shears, beauty salon shears, knives, and small garden tools (less than 12”) to the shop not later than July 17.  Wrap them well in a towel, box, or other container that will keep those of us who handle the bundle from getting cut.  VERY IMPORTANT: include your name, address,  and phone number and a check or cash for payment.  Beauty salon shears are $20; everything else is $7 each.

The summer sewing challenge, “Do You See What I See?” is in full swing.  It isn't too late for you to join in the fun!   Come to the shop to get a rules sheet and pick your inspirational picture. We have three categories with prizes in each: All Quilters, Kids Under 18, and CQ Teachers/Staff. Finished quilts are just 20” x 20”, due on July 22nd. You can do this and have a whale of a good time! There is a $5 registration fee. Top prize for All Quilters and Teachers/Staff is a $50 Capital Quilts Gift Card; top prize for Kids Under 18 is a $30 CQ Gift Card.  A few quilts have been turned in already, including one from Saudi Arabia!

Go 'n' Piece,
Alison

COMMUNITY CORNER:

We're looking for donations of fun, bright, child friendly prints for our upcoming CQ Cares Pillowcase Workshop.  We are in need of yardage, as most of our already donated "kid fabric" is in FQs, which are inappropriate for pillowcase sewing.  We will have take-home kits available for those unable to make the workshop.

We’ve received requests for kennel quilts from a shelter helping pets affected by the fires in Colorado and from a shelter in Florida. Small Kennel Quilt kits are available in the shop; just ask for one!

BLUE BAG BONANZA:

Congratulations to Lisa G., winner of the June Blue Bag drawing!  The July prize is a teal Stonehenge strip set from Hoffman Fabrics.

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.

Sign up for our 5th Saturday Club! Purchase your Gold Tag for $10 and be able to participate in special sales on each of the four 5th Saturdays on 2018. The next one is at the end of September. The Golden Tickets will not be available for purchase on the day of the 5th Saturday Sale.

Our thanks to everybody who shops at Capital Quilts and who participates in the Blue Bag Bonanza.
