What's New at CQ 07/26/18

"It is hot, steamy and wet. It is raining. I am tempted to write a poem. But I remember what it said on one rejection slip: 'After a heavy rainfall, poems titled 'Rain' pour in from across the nation.'" Sylvia Plath

Dear Soggy but Sew-Happy Friends,

The sun always shines at Capital Quilts! Let us help you amuse yourself on these rainy days. In addition to a lot of fabric, patterns, and books, we have kits, such as the Mini Mosaics, and jigsaw puzzles (another form of piecing!)

The Do You See What I See quilt challenge quilts are in, and they are awesome! The creativity expressed in these little quilts is breathtaking. Now through August 9, visit the shop and vote on your favorite quilts. Winners will be announced on Sunday, August 12 at 2:15. Please join us for the Awarding of the Awards at that time.

Do you know of a child 8-12 years old who wants to learn how to sew? Bring them to Capital Quilts for our Kid’s Camp: Summer is Sew Fun! Here is what we will be doing:

     Day 1: make a pillowcase
Day 2: make a drawstring bag
Day 3: learn how to embroider by hand and sew on a button
Day 4: make a pouch with a zipper
     Day 5: Finish-It-Friday

Machines are provided for use in class, or you can bring your own. Also provided are the fabric, an embroidery needle, floss, and buttons for embroidery day, as well as all patterns for all projects. Anne Brill teaches machine use and safety while doing the projects. If the child has already made one or more of these projects and would like to do something different, we can accommodate that. The camp meets Monday-Friday, August 6-10, 10:30-1.

Janome Club: Don’t forget that we are meeting on August 4 (instead of the 18th) next month! Same time, 10:30-12:30.

Don’t miss the bus! The Quilters’ Quest 2018 shop hop draws ever closer! We are offering two bus trips this year: #1 on October 19 & 20, and #2 on October 22 & 23. Each trip is two days long and visits all 10 shops in the shop hop. For just $150, you get a light breakfast, lunch, water, snacks, entertainment, a “bus mom (or dad)” to take care of all the paperwork and make your experience the best, and, best of all, we do all the driving while you relax on a luxury coach. You will spend about an hour in each shop. Each person who visits all ten shops will get a 15% discount card good at all 10 shops until just before Quilters’ Quest 2019 and a tote bag. Sign up today!

We have made some changes to classes. Annie Jeffrey’s The Art of Boro Stitching class has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 4, 2-5. Rae Cumbie’s Surface Design Fun class has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 6, 10-4. Annette’s Embroider Me class has been moved from July 25 & August 1 to Thursday, September 6 & 20, 6:30-8:30. Her Machine Quilting for Beginners will meet on July 26, 1-3:30 and August 9, 1:30-4 instead of August 2. And, we've added a Rulers for the Longarm: an Introduction class on August 14 at 10am.

Go 'n' Piece,
Alison

COMMUNITY CORNER:

On September 14 Capital Quilts Cares will be participating in National Million Pillowcase Day. To meet our goal of 100 cases, we have Pillowcase Kits available for you to take home and complete. All the fabric needed for three pillowcases is in each kit. Each completed pillowcase will count towards reaching our goal of 100 cases. Just ask the front desk for a kit. We are in need of more yardage for these kits, as most of our already donated "kid fabric" is in FQs, which are inappropriate for pillowcase sewing.

Our supply of Small Kennel Quilts has been greatly depleted by recent requests for them! These 12"x18" are quick and easy to sew up, please consider picking up one of our free kits, or making some using fabric you have on hand, but no longer love. Instructions can be found here: TQPM Small Kennel Quilts.

 BLUE BAG BONANZA:

The July prize is a teal Stonehenge strip set from Hoffman Fabrics.

To be entered in each month’s drawing, bring your Capital Quilts Blue Bag with you when you shop. Make sure you show it to the staffer at the register! Upon completion of your sales transaction, your name will be put in the jar for the drawing at the end of the month. The more you shop, the more chances you have to win. Don’t have a Blue Bag? Purchase one at the shop, by phone, or online for just $4.99. We save all of the entries for the year, and at the end of the year we draw a Grand Prize Winner from all the entries.

Sign up for our 5th Saturday Club! Purchase your Gold Tag for $10 and be able to participate in special sales on each of the four 5th Saturdays on 2018. The next one is at the end of September. The Golden Tickets will not be available for purchase on the day of the 5th Saturday Sale.
