What's New at CQ 9/6/18

"Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Dear Needlers,

September is International Sewing Month! Throughout the month we’ll be offering special prices on a variety of items, including sewing machines and accessories, thread, furniture, and sewing tools. In addition, the event’s sponsor, the Sewing Dealers Trade Association, has prize giveaways provided by industry manufacturers, that include sewing machines, furniture, lighting, threads, sewing tools, and more. The grand prize is a $600 shopping spree right here at Capital Quilts! Come into the shop and fill out a registration ticket…no purchase necessary, do it every day if you want to!

**This week we offer a 20% discount on all threads and patterns. We already discount
Janome sewing machines every day, so I’ll add a $25 Capital Quilts Gift Card for machines
costing up to $2999 and $50 for machines costing $3000 or more.

A huge thank you to Jan Wisor and her Capital Quilts Cares group that produced 43 bags for Days for Girls. These bags will be given to the local Days for Girls chapter to be stuffed with personal hygiene products and sent to girls and women all over the world who would otherwise miss school or work when having their periods. Learn more at www.daysforgirls.org.

One of our quilters, Barbara, has broken her foot and is unable to do any quilting. Beth is taking over Barbara’s current projects plus teaching duties until Barbara can come back to work. Beth asks that if you have a quilt that needs to be quilted in time for the holidays, please have it to her no later than November 1. No custom quilting will be done; all designs must be all-over designs. Your top must be squared and pressed and seams ironed flat. The backing and batting must be at least 5” wider than the quilt top on all sides. The backing must also be squared and pressed and seams ironed flat. Beth won’t have time to fix quilts with holes, weak seams, puffy places, waffling, and the like, so please make sure your quilt is ready for quilting before you make an appointment with her! She is able to attach the binding so that it is ready for you to hand-stitch in place. Thank you for your patience at this busy time of the year.

Quilters’ Quest is just 6 weeks away! This 10-day long shop hop is one of the highlights of the year in our quilting community. All 10 shops have made a quilt for the event and will be giving out the patterns for their quilts for free during the Quest. You might win a daily prize at any of the shops as well as have fun doing a Scavenger Hunt. Visit all 10 shops and get your passport stamped; the last shop you visit will enter your name in a drawing for lots of big prizes, including a Featherweight sewing machine, boxes of fat quarters, Aurifil thread, and much more. Visit www.quiltersquest.org for more information.

**Let us do all the driving for you! We will take you to all 10 shops in 2 days in the
comfort of a luxury coach. A light breakfast and lunch are included. We take care of
all the paperwork (passport stamping, daily drawing tickets, etc.) while you enjoy each shop.
Those who visit all 10 shops receive a special tote bag with goodies inside. Register online, by
phone at 301-527-0598, or in person at the shop.

Phyliss Twigg Hatcher will be here this Saturday, Sept. 8, at 10:45 to give a lecture and trunk show all about Aboriginal art and fabric design. Learn how present-day Aboriginal artists make fabric designs and the meaning of the designs as they relate to Aboriginal culture and life in the outback of Australia.

Also coming up is our fall Handi Quilter Education Event, “Quilting is a Stitch”, on September 14 and 15. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn from Susan Manry, one of the industry’s premiere educators. She will teach two classes each day, from 10-1 and 2-5. On Friday, the morning class will focus on using rulers safely and effectively; the afternoon class explores quilting backgrounds, borders, and blocks. If you took the morning class, you’ll be able to apply what you learned about rulers to this second class. Saturday morning’s class is about Handi Quilter ProStitcher, the computer software that guides your machine as it does the quilting. Susan is a ProStitcher expert and one of the best teachers in the country; people come from afar to attend her classes! She will base her teaching on the level of knowledge among the students in the class; all levels are welcome. In the afternoon, Susan will show you what else a longarm machine can do beside quilting, such as piecing, couching, and binding. Each class is $30 and can be taken individually; you don’t have to take all four. Participants receive a 10% discount on Handi Quilter items purchased during the two days of classes. Special machine packages are also available. If you are thinking about buying a machine, these classes are a great way to try them out and learn more about them.

Register for the Handi Quilter “Quilting is a Stitch” classes online, by phone at 301-527-0598, or in the shop. SIGN UP TODAY!

Row by Row 2018 ended on September 4. You can still purchase our pattern and kit in the shop. We cannot mail either the pattern or the kit until November. We have not yet had anyone bring us a completed (quilted, bound, and labeled) Row by Row quilt. The first person to do so receives 25 fat quarters as a prize. If your quilt includes our 2018 Kennedy Center block, you will also receive a Capital Quilts Gift Card for $25.

Go ‘n’ Piece,
Alison
