What's New at CQ 9/20/18

"Any time women come together with a collective intention, it's a powerful thing. Whether it's sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens." Phylicia Rashad

Dear Sew-elated Friends,

The last days of International Sewing Month are upon us. Today through September 28, take 15% off Notions. Stock up on needles, thread, rulers, stencils, marking pens and pencils, and so much more. This sale is on in-stock items, no special orders, so don’t delay! The usual fine print applies: may not be combined with other coupons or discounts; clearance items are not included (they are already heavily discounted).

For those of you with Capital Quilts Blue Bags and a Golden Ticket, the third 5th Saturday Club Sale is coming up, on September 29. Save 20% on everything you can fit in your Blue Bag. If you would like to participate in this sale but do not have a blue bag or a ticket, purchase them at the shop before the sale day; we will NOT be selling them on September 29. Your Blue Bag and Golden Ticket get you in the door for this sale and for the 5th Saturday Club sale on December 29.

The ten shop owners who are working hard to bring you a fabulous Quilters’ Quest shop hop had their last meeting this week. Everything is on track to be the best Quest ever! Stop by my office the next time you are in the shop and I might give you a sneak peak of this year’s tote bag. The tote bag is given to those who visit all ten shops during Quest. The easiest and most fun way to do that is to ride one of our buses! We still have room on both buses, one on October 19 & 20 and the other on October 22 & 23, but they are beginning to get full. Don’t miss out; sign up today!

Capital Quilts sponsors awards at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair every year in some of the quilting categories. This year’s winners are Ann Marie Schmelter, for Best Applique; Shelli Ritenour, for Best Embroidery; and Ann Ferguson, for Best over 70. Congratulations to all of you!

Did you know there is a way to load quilts on your longarm frame in about 20 minutes instead of an hour, no pinning involved? How, you ask? By using LEADERGRIPS. Last weekend Susan Manry, Handi Quilter Educator extraordinaire, showed us how to use them easily and quickly. We have 2-leader and 3-leader systems; use the 2-leader system if you like to float your quilt tops. If you float your tops, you can use a new product called Super Clamps to help maintain tension in the top. Ask for a demonstration next time you are in the shop.

Go n Piece,
Alison

Tired of pushing around all those big quilts on your small machine? Not brave enough to even try? Divide and conquer is the answer! Annette shows you how to section your quilt tops quilt these smaller sections then piece them together. No one will ever know that you used the Machine Quilting in Sections technique!  To learn how, attend Annette's Lecture/Demo on Friday, September 21 at 10:30am.

Marianne has machine maintenance appointments available for Sunday, September 23rd.

The Children’s Inn at NIH is a place where families can stay while their child is being treated for a serious disease. Annette is offering Machine Quilting for the Beginner starting on Monday, September 24th at 6:30pm.  Directed to the beginner machine quilter who is unsure what to do with her hands and how to attach and use her feet. If you have put off jumping into the water or have jumped in and floundered, this class is for you. In the first lesson we will cover machine quilting with the walking foot, and free motion quilting in the second lesson.

As a reminder, we now have a sewing machine technician in the shop three days a week:  Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.  Appointments are highly recommended.

There are three seats available in the evening session of the Complete Course of Quilting, starting Wednesday, September 26th at 6pm.  The incomparable Annette will teach you everything you need to know about quilt making, including fabric selection, cutting, piecing by machine, pressing, set-ins, paper piecing, and so much more. You will make a sampler quilt incorporating all the major quilt techniques, and learn to sandwich, quilt, and bind your masterpiece. It is the perfect opportunity to start at the beginning and learn one step at a time. At the end, you will be able to say proudly, "I am a quilter!"

Our monthly free Sit 'n' Sew will be held on Friday, September 28th from 5-9pm.  We provide beverages, you bring a snack to share with your fellow quilters.  Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lucy Boston (1892-1990) lived near Cambridge, England, and began her writing, designing, and sewing career when in her sixties. “Patchwork of the Crosses” is made with just two shapes. Learn how to prepare and combine these shapes to create many wonderful blocks on Sunday, September 30th at 1pm. This wonderful English Paper Piecing project can be made even more fabulous by purposefully cutting themed motifs for some of the block units. This is called “fussy cutting”, and Kim will discuss how to identify, where to place motifs, and how to cut them out.
