What's New at CQ 11/8/18

"Gnomes are supposed to be good luck in a garden, protecting against pests and diseases. A mythic gatekeeper..." Kelly Asbury

Dear Sew Fine Friends,

I am back from the Houston Quilt Market! It had a very different look from the last few years: colors are pastel, with shades of mint, coral, and gray blue mixed with cream, white, and pale gray prevailing. Northcott and Michael Miller, the two brands of solids that we carry, are both adding dozens of new colors to their lines to complement the new color ways. The bright colors we are used to are still with us: Kaffe, Tula, Alison Glass, and others are going strong with beautiful new lines. Prints, especially in the pastel colors, are much smaller. Garment patterns continue to be a growing phenomenon. I did not find a knock-your-socks off new ruler or notion; most seemed to be variations of existing ones. Gnomes are everywhere! Quilts, clothing, bags, boxes, Tuffets, you name it, it’s got a gnome on it.

It’s here! Our fall AccuQuilt GO! Education Event starts tomorrow!  AccuQuilt National Educator Jeannie Miller will be with us on November 9 and 10 for 3 classes full of information, tips, tricks, and quilts, not to mention a fun time! The Friday morning class at 10:30 is called “Cut Less, Quilt More” and is for beginners. Friday afternoon at 2:30, Jeannie goes into more depth about the AccuQuilt machines and how to make creative use of them; this is an intermediate class. Finally, on Saturday morning at 10:30, Jeannie offers an advanced class called “There’s a Die for That”; she shows us how to adapt a pattern so that the AccuQuilt GO! machine can be used to do the cutting. Each class is $10, and you’ll receive a $10 Capital Quilts Gift Card at the door. We’ll have prizes and giveaways as well. Sign up online, in person at the shop, or by phone at 301-527-0598. Do it today!

Wondering what to get yourself for a holiday present? How about a really comfortable sewing chair? Heavenly Seating has three sizes of adjustable chairs to fit almost anyone. They adjust up and down and have adjustable backs and lumbar support. There are lots of options to choose from (arms or no arms, caster for hard floors vs. carpet, casters that lock, casters that won’t roll when you are sitting in the chair, over 150 colors in several different fabrics, and more). Try one out in the Sewing Machine Department next time you are in the shop.

Capital Quilts needs someone to do quilting for customers. The job includes meeting with customers to determine pattern, thread color, and any other requirements; doing the quilting in a professional and timely way; and completing paperwork (minimal). Also available are opportunities to teach classes and mentor rental customers. Please respond to this newsletter email if this is something you are interested in doing.

If you are a pro at quilting with Westalee rulers on your domestic sewing machine and you like to teach, I am looking for someone to teach Westalee classes here at the shop. If you are interested, please reply to this newsletter.

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison
