What's New at CQ 11/19/18

"I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual." Henry David Thoreau

Dear Sew-worthy Friends,

Did you miss this Newsletter last Thursday? My apologies: I was out sick and it didn’t get itself written. I am feeling much better now and am here to let you in on what’s happening.

Carol Dean Jones, author of the popular “A Quilting Cozy” series of books, called me today to thank me for carrying her books. It turns out she lives not all that far away and is willing to come to the shop to do a talk and a book signing!! Carol will be here at noon on Saturday, December 15. This is a free event, but please register online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598 so that we have an idea of how many people to expect.

All of the clubs we had in 2018 will continue to meet in 2019, with a couple of additions. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the clubs and what happens in a club meeting, we invite you to attend a regular club meeting at no charge in December. Here are the dates and times:

Dec. 1: Longarm Club meets 10-12. ProStitcher Club meets 12:30-2:30.
Dec. 2: Let’s Get Dressed Club meets 2:30-4:30.
Dec. 8: 2nd Saturday Club meets 9-10:30. Wool & Hand Embroidery Club meets 12-2.
Dec. 9: EPP (English Paper Piecing) Club meets 12-2. Art & Stitch Club meets 12:30-2:30.
Dec. 10: The Hand Piecers meet from 1-3.
Dec. 11: Improv Club meets 6:30-8:30.
Dec. 15: Janome Club meets from 10:30-12:30.
Dec. 22: AccuQuilt Club meets from 10:30-12:30.

The two new clubs are 1st Saturday Club and AccuQuilt GO! Club. Please visit the 2nd Saturday Club meeting on the 8th to learn more about the 1st Saturday Club; the meetings will be very similar, but focusing on a different project. The GO! Club will meet on the 4th Sunday of each month in 2019, from 1-3. Because that is so close to Christmas, we are going to have a “demo” meeting on Sunday, January 6, at 1. Liz will talk about the club and do a little demo to give you an idea of what the club will be like. She is also open to your ideas of what you’d like to do during club meetings!

I hope you’ll come to one or more of the club meetings. Clubs are lots of fun, and you will make new friends as well as learning new techniques and sharing tips, tricks, and projects.

Don’t forget we are open only from 10-2 on Wednesday, to allow our staff to prepare for and enjoy Thanksgiving.

Friday, of course, is Black Friday. Come on in for some good deals: finish a bolt and take 15% off, 20% off Christmas and Hannukah fabric, and 20% off Northcott and Michael Miller solids. Some of our vendors are offering sales, too: see below.

And don’t forget that Saturday is Small Business Saturday. Support your local stores and the local economy by doing your shopping locally. You can visit our online shop at www.capitalquilts.com if it’s too cold to set foot outside!

From all of us at Capital Quilts, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

Dear Stella has sent us Ginko, featuring -- you guessed it -- ginko leaves!  Also, cats, cranes, koi, and flowers.  Tranquil in blues and white, this collection is easy to find a project for.  $12.50 per yard.

Did you know we have kits?  There's something for everyone, from small wool projects to bed-sized quilts!  Here are just a few: Bareroots Puppy Love or Cat's Meow, $21.95 each; Mini Mosaic Sea Turtle, Lighthouse, or Salty (Crab), $29.99 each; Guinevere in peaches & pinks, $59.99 each; Breezy in wintertime prints, $49.99 each; Seaside Table Runner in elegant Christmas prints, $32.99 each; Gemology, regularly $139.95, on sale for $90.97; Gourdy's Gang featuring Hoffman Batiks, $35.99 each; Vintage Holiday, $179.95,  Violet Craft's Peacock, $49.99; and Tula Pink's Wayfinder, $179.99.

CLASSES

In Tranquility, you will create a beautiful landscape quilt, layer by layer. The background is made using a mosaic technique, and the picture is built using applique techniques.  This 3-session class begins Saturday, 11/24 at 2:30pm.

This little Zippered Pouch makes a great gift!  Once you’ve learned how to install the zipper, putting the rest of this little pouch together is easy as pie. Bet you can’t make just one! Annie teaches on Monday, 11/24 at 10:30am.

If you have some free motion experience, and are looking to expand your repertoire, More Fun with Free Motion is the class for you!   Karen will talk about borders, sashing, fillers, feathers, and more, on Monday, 11/26 at 2:00pm.

Don't have enough room in your house to easily sandwich a quilt? Bring your top backing batting and supplies to CQ and we will help you sandwich that quilt in no time! Sandwich Day appointments are available for Tuesday, 11/27 at 2, 3, 4, and 5pm.

Learn the ins and outs of the longarm machine and the frame, how to set up for quilting a quilt, what proper tension is, and some basic quilting designs on Wednesday, 11/28 at 11am.

The Retreat Bag from Emmaline Bags is super popular!  This boxy bag comes in two sizes. The best thing about it is when you unzip the zipper and open the top, it stays open wide so you can reach in and easily see what you are looking for.  Annie has made a few, and will show you how to make your own on Friday, 11/30 at 11am.

Our Free Sit 'n' Sew is Friday, 11/30 from 5-9.  No registrations; space is first come, first served.  We'll have beverages for you.  Many participants bring a snack to share will fellow sewists.
