Dear Delightful Makers,
We have a new Capital Quilts Rewards program for you! Beginning on June 1, you will earn points every time you make a purchase at Capital Quilts, 1 point for every dollar spent. Our computer will track your points for you and show you how much you have earned right on your receipt. When you have earned 300 points, you will receive a $15 CQ Reward, a coupon that is good for 1 year. There are no cards to carry or remember to bring with you and your points never expire. You can spend your $15 CQ Reward on anything we sell in the shop. You can save up your coupons and use them together toward one purchase (just watch those expiration dates!).
Points are earned on regularly priced items. Classes, machines (including Janome, Handi Quilter, and AccuQuilt), cabinets, service, clearance, and otherwise discounted items do not earn points in the program.
With the start of CQ Rewards on June 1, we’ll be saying goodbye to the Birthday Discount. Because we don’t want to disappoint those of you whose birthday falls on or between June 1 and December 31, 2019, we’ve made May our Birthday Bash month. If your birthday falls on or between May 1 and December 31, 2019, you can take your birthday discount during the month of May, instead of your usual month. That’s right – take your 15% off regularly priced items every time you visit the shop in May if your birthday falls later in the year.
Beginning June 1, we will send you a Birthday Coupon good for 10% off a one-time purchase of regularly priced items (that is, off the entire purchase). This coupon will be good for 14 days.
No other programs are affected. The Blue Bag Bonanza lives on and your Quilters’ Quest discount card is still good.
Have you joined the Aurifil Club yet? We invite you to purchase a thread box containing one large spool of white Aurifil 50 wt. thread; usually this box costs $22.99, but we offer it to you for only $15.99. With the box you will receive an Aurifil Club Card. Each month, come into the shop and purchase one large spool of Aurifil thread, in the color of your choice, at a 15% discount. We will punch out the name of the month on your Club Card. We only have 30 boxes to sell, so, as they say on TV, don’t delay, get yours today!
Come see us at the Friendship Star Quilt Guild Oh My Stars Quilt Show at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. Over 250 quilts will be on display in the Home Arts building. There will be raffles of the guild’s raffle quilt, baskets, and a Featherweight sewing machine. Enjoy the Silent Auction, demonstrations, and children’s activities. Participate in the Service Projects Sit and Sew. Shop at the Members Boutique, but save some money for Capital Quilts: we are vending at the show! We are also introducing a pair of young designers, known online as Little Bunny Quilts. They will be doing a trunk show in the Demo area on Saturday, and we will have a quilt or two of theirs in our booth along with their patterns.
We are now carrying the Westalee quilting templates and accessories. Look for the display in the Janome Department. If there is something you want that I don’t have, please let me know and I will order it for you.
Capital Quilts is once again in need of a machine technician, especially one who is familiar with sergers. If you know of anybody, or if you have a mechanically-minded spouse who would like to learn a new trade, please send him or her our way! It’s a great retirement job: once you’ve been to training, you will work just 4 hours most weeks.
Go ‘n’ Piece, Alison

A Featherweight Clinic is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2-4, with Marianne Losey. Learn how to take your Featherweight apart, clean and lube it, and put it back together again. Ask to see the new Sew Steady table designed specially to go with Featherweights!
There are 2 seats available in the Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine. Take this class if you’d like to rent one of our machines or if you are thinking about purchasing one and want to learn more about the machines. The class meets on Monday, April 29, 11-2.
The Daydream Table Runner class is also on April 29, from 1-4. Cathy Sullivan will show you how to make the blocks and create the table runner. She has a little trunk show to show you what else you can do with this block!
The last class in April is Debra Ball’s Stack, Whack, and Shuffle class on Tuesday, April 30, 10:30-12:30. Work some magic by cutting several blocks at once and interchanging their parts. The blocks shape up quickly and are a study in organized chaos that looks really good!
May Classes:
If you took Jan’s Star Storm class back in March and haven’t finished it yet, or if you are working on it by yourself and are stuck, take Finish It: Star Storm on Friday, May 3, 10:30-1:30. Jan will help you work toward getting it done.
What a wonderful Mother’s Day gift, or a gift for a friend… or for yourself! The Perfect Needle Book is about the size of a credit card when folded up and include a small pair of scissors, a needle threader, a place to stick on a needle pad, felt for holding needles and pins, and two pockets for sundries (like band-aids or flat thread holders). That’s a lot in such a small package, and they are a treat to look at, too. Karen Fricke teaches on Sunday, May 5, 12:30-2:30. Kit included.
Calling all longarm machine quilters and machine embroiderers! Learn how to use a wonderful design software called Art & Stitch. This is a hands-on class. We will cover the basics and the most often used tools and techniques. The class serves as both an introduction to ANS and as a skill builder for intermediate users. The small class format provides plenty of time for questions. Learn how to create your own Edge-2-Edge quilting patterns. Elyse Turkeltaub teaches on Sunday, May 5, 1-4. Rae Cumbie returns on Thursday and Friday, May 9 and 10, 10-4, to teach Knits: The Basics and Beyond. Enjoy a trunk show of possibilities, then spend two days stitching up well-fitting knit tops with flexible seams and smoothly finished necklines and hems. Explore finishing techniques that will give your wardrobe variety. If you’ve already taken the basics class, spend these two days working on your knit variations, adding cuffs, embellishments, and crossover styles.
Take your machine quilting to the next level with Custom Quilting with ProStitcher. Use ProStitcher to fit various quilting designs to blocks, triangles, sashing, and borders. Learn how to size, align, and skew, as well as fitting border corners and “chunking” borders. Learn how to crop out areas of the quilting design for appliques and embroideries. Pre-requisite: experience using ProStitcher for Edge-to-Edge quilting. The class is limited to 4 people. Elyse Turkeltaub teaches on Friday, May 10, 11-2.
Need help sandwiching a quilt? Make an appointment with Carol at either 7 or 8 o’clock on Friday, May 10. If you are planning on having your quilt quilted on a longarm machine, you do not need to have it sandwiched.

May 16 - Charity Bear is the cuddliest bear you will ever sew. This stuffed little bear has beady little eyes and a big nose. There are several variations that you can make to personalize your bear. The pattern is easy, beginners welcome! 10:15-12:15
May 25 – Join the QOV (Quilts of Valor) group and help us make quilts for veterans. They are a perfect little project for practicing your quilting skills! We receive requests from shelters for completed kennel quilts on a frequent basis. We are running low on finished quilts and need your help making more.
Days for Girls: In conjunction with two girls from Northern Virginia working on their Senior Charity Project, we are currently accepting donations of fabric to make bags for the Days for Girls kits. Fabric should be medium to dark, colorful, and preferably printed. Please avoid any depictions of persons, animals, faces, insects (butterflies are OK), guns, camo, and any light-colored fabrics that will show stains more easily. Geometric prints and florals are preferred. There is a tub near the front of the store that you can place your donations into. Please visit www.daysforgirls.org to learn more about this empowering program.
