What's New at CQ 5/16/19

"For the most part, having more money and more fame make your life harder. It just does. I've seen it happen with people. You know, it's so hard to stay normal. It's so hard to stay happy. It's hard to remember why you were doing what you did in the first place." Rashida Jones

Dear Fabric Specialists,

Are you feeling overwhelmed with graduations, team dinners, gardening, and whatever else May has to throw at you? Need some therapeutic time with your sewing machine? Come to Night Owl Sewing with Kat this Saturday, May 18, 6-12! You’ll get pizza, beverages and a $10 Gift Card, an uninterrupted time to sew, and lots of TLC from Kat. Bring your own machine, supplies, and project to work on.

Sue Moats will be presenting some of the Quilts of Valor made by our QOV Chapter here at Capital Quilts to Vietnam veterans. The ceremony takes place on May 21 at 5pm at the Montgomery County Memorial Wall in Rockville. All are invited to attend.

We have a new Capital Quilts Rewards program for you! Beginning on June 1, you will earn points every time you make a purchase at Capital Quilts, 1 point for every dollar spent. Our computer will track your points for you and show you how much you have earned right on your receipt. When you have earned 300 points, you will receive a $15 CQ Reward, a coupon that is good for 1 year. There are no cards to carry or remember to bring with you and your points never expire. You can spend your $15 reward on anything we sell in the shop. You can save up your coupons and use them together toward one purchase (just watch those expiration dates!).

Points are earned on regularly priced items. Classes, machines (including Janome, Handi Quilter, and AccuQuilt), cabinets, services, clearance, and otherwise discounted items are not included in the program.

With the start of CQ Rewards on June 1, we’ll be saying goodbye to the Birthday Discount. Because we don’t want to disappoint customers whose birthday falls on or between June 1 and December 31, 2019, we’ve made May our Birthday Bash month. If your birthday falls on or between May 1 and December 31, 2019, you can take your birthday discount during the month of May, instead of your usual month. That’s right – take your 15% off regularly priced items every time you visit the shop in May if your birthday falls later in the year.

Beginning June 1, we will send you a Birthday Coupon good for 10% off a one-time purchase of regularly priced items (that is, off the entire purchase). This coupon will be good for 14 days.

No other programs are affected. The Blue Bag Bonanza lives on and your Quilters’ Quest discount card is still good.

Go ‘n’ Piece,
Alison

Here is the introduction to machine quilting that you have been waiting for. In Intro to Machine Quilting, you learn how to set your sewing machine up for quilting, how to stitch in the ditch and do straight line quilting. In the second session, we’ll move on to free motion quilting. Karen Fricke is your instructor on Sunday, May 19 and Saturday May 25, 1-3.

There are Sandwich Day appointments available on Tuesday, May 21 at 2, 3, and 4. Bring your quilt top, backing, batting, and spray baste or pins and Carol will help you get your quilt sandwiched in no time. If you are planning on having a longarm quilter do the quilting, you do not need to sandwich your quilt.

There is one seat left in Getting Started: the Handi Quilter Longarm Machine on Saturday, May 25, 11-2. Completion of this course certifies you to be able to rent the Amara and Forte longarm machines. If you are thinking about purchasing a longarm, this is a great way to learn about the machines in depth.

There are 2 seats left in Getting Started: the HQ Simply Sixteen on Wednesday, May 29, 11-1. Completion of this course certifies you to be able to rent the Simply Sixteen longarm machine. If you are thinking about purchasing a Simply Sixteen, this is a great way to learn about the machine in depth.

CAPITAL QUILTS CARES:
All events are free and fabric is provided. You need bring only your sewing machine, neutral thread, and sewing supplies. Please register for each workshop so that we know how many to expect. Coming up:

May 25
– Join the QOV (Quilts of Valor) group and help us make quilts for veterans. We have enough sewists signed up already, but you can help with pressing, putting blocks on the design walls, or just generally helping the sewists. 3:30-6

June 13 – Make Fidget Quilts for people with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia, ADD, or autism. You will machine piece a small quilt using charm squares, then embellish it with buttons, hook-and-loop tape, zippers, ribbons, and other fun add-ons. Some hand sewing is required. Jan Wisor leads this project. Skill level: confidant beginner. 1-4

June 14 – Celebrate Flag Day by participating in this QOV sewing event to make quilts for veterans. 10:30-12:30

June 16 – Stitch along with Billye Roberts to make string quilts for the Interfaith Works Women’s Center. These quilts decorate the beds in the shelter, making the rooms welcoming and cheerful. Skill level: easy. 12-3

Small Kennel Quilts: We are always accepting small kennel quilts, and we always have free kits available for you to take home to make and return to us. They are a perfect little project for practicing your quilting skills! We receive requests from shelters for completed kennel quilts on a frequent basis, and there are a lot coming in now from the flooded parts of the Midwest. We are running low on finished quilts and need your help making more.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

AccuQuilt has released three new dies this week. The cutest one is the Sea Life Medley (55190). I have one in the shop and can take your order; AccuQuilt has already sold out of their initial run and expect to get more in pretty soon. $59.99.

The other two dies are Fork-Knife-Spoon (55261, $49.99) and Emojis (55191, $59.99). All three dies are 6” x 12” and work in all of the AccuQuilt cutting machines.

Island Batiks sent a lot of drool-worthy batiks this week. $13.99 per yard.

We've also received three rayon bolts from Island Batiks.  These are GREAT for sewing up a quick summer skirt, or the popular "Little Somethin' Jacket".

Sea Glass from Blank features hand painted watercolor patterns and repeat designs that are colorful, unique, sophisticated, fresh and fun, all in cool shades of blue.  $12.50 per yard.
