What's New at CQ 06/20/2019

"Summer is the time when one sheds one's tensions with one's clothes, and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit. A few of those days and you can become drunk with the belief that all's right with the world." Ada Louise Huxtable

Dear Quilters of Exquisite Taste,

Tomorrow is the first day of summer, and that means it is the first day of Row by Row 2019! The theme this year is “Taste the Experience”. We interpret that to mean all things food and the dining experience. Our block, “Capital Diner”, stands alone, but it is also designed to coordinate with the other shops in Quilters’ Quest. If you visit all 10 Quest shops and make all 10 blocks, you will have a very nice Row by Row quilt. The 10 shops are Bear’s Paw in Towson, MD, Material Girls in La Plata, MD, Patches in Mt. Airy, MD, The Crabby Quilter in Annapolis, MD, Traditions at the White Swan in Hagerstown, MD, Scrappy Apple in Winchester, VA, The Crazy Cousin in Fredericksburg, VA, Jinny Beyer in Great Falls, VA, Artistic Artifacts in Alexandria, VA, and, of course, Capital Quilts.

Not familiar with Quilters’ Quest? It is an annual shop hop that the 10 shops do together, this year October 11-20. The 2019 theme is “Book Tour”, and each shop has selected a book to highlight in its shop. We each have a unique quilt pattern that we have designed just for Quest, available for free during the shop hop, 10” fabric squares that you can earn or purchase, games, prizes, and lots of lovely shopping. Each shop is sponsoring a bus that travels to all 10 shops in 2 days; bus riders receive a Quilters’ Quest 2019 Tote Bag and a Rewards Card worth 15% off purchases made at the 10 shops through September 30, 2020 (some restrictions apply). You can reserve a seat on a bus now through October 10, while available. Visit www.quiltersquest.org to learn more.

Are you part of a group that needs a meeting space? Capital Quilts is happy to rent you its classroom for just $20 an hour. It’s a great space for sewing bees, small sewing, knitting or other craft groups, and kids’ sewing parties. Our staff is on hand to assist you. You can bring food and drink (just please keep it in the classroom!).

If you are interested in purchasing a sit-down quilting machine, I can offer you a great deal on a new Handi Quilter Sweet Sixteen that includes free shipping ($230 value), free TruStitch ($995 value), and a free 5’ HighLight ($350 value). Give me a call at 301-527-0598 or stop by and visit the shop. Offer valid through June 30.

It’s a great time to buy a new Janome sewing machine or serger. Pay what Capital Quilts employees pay; get the same discount they enjoy. Come talk to us about the Employee Pricing Event and test drive some machines! You won’t get a better price for a fabulous machine at any other time of the year. Come in before July 31.

Sewing Tip: We all know accuracy is important in our measurements. For a quick way to turn a given width, say 1” for a hem, mark a piece of cardstock or other light cardboard with a line 1” from the edge. Lay the cardstock down on top of your fabric with the line parallel to the edge. Turn the fabric over the cardstock so that the edge is aligned with the line. Press and voila! Be sure to mark the line on the card with a pencil or pen that won’t leave a mark on your fabric. Capital Quilts carries a product made by Clover called “Press Perfect” that is pre-marked with 1”, 1/8”, ¼” and ½” lines as well as diagonals. Ask for it!

We are currently looking for a part-time employee with flexible availability. If working in a quilt shop sounds like a dream come true, please contact Alison directly by calling 301-527-0598.

Those of you who have joined the Aurifil Thread Club, don’t forget to bring your card to the shop in June to get your discount on your large spool of thread! Those of you who haven’t joined, what are you waiting for??

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

The class will learn about the sewing machine and how to thread it and wind a bobbin. From there we go on to learning about fabric, then how to sew a simple seam and press it. We also learn how to “unsew” with a seam ripper. We will make a pillowcase to practice what we learn.

Liz Brodsky is teaching the Capital Quilts Complete Course of Quilting this summer. Classes will meet on Monday afternoons, 2:30-4:30, for 10 weeks beginning July 1. Learn everything from fabric selection to binding and making a label. Class will not meet on Labor Day. The final class is on September 9.
