Dear Sewing Savants,

Welcome back from your summer sojourn!

We are very busy getting ready for Quilters’ Quest shop hop, which is just 5 weeks away. Have you reserved your seat on our motor coach yet? We travel to all 10 shops in 2 days, Monday and Tuesday, October 14 and 15, and we provide lunch, snacks, and a hostess with the mostest to make your trip easy and fun. You will receive a Quilters’ Quest 2019 tote bag with some goodies inside, a chance to win some very nice prizes, and a card for a 15% discount on purchases made at all 10 participating shops during the next year, through September 30, 2020 (some exclusions apply).

We will be vending at a quilt show this month, Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22. The show is presented by the Friendship Quilters of Linthicum and Eternal Quilters guilds at the Lindale Middle School, 415 Andover Road, Linthicum Heights, MD, from 10-4 each day. There will be some 200 quilts on display, vendors, boutiques, demonstrations, a silent auction, and raffle quilts. Come see us!

Our thanks to Nancy Sharp for sharing her quilts with us in August. This month, we present the quilts of Bobbie Korengold. Bobbie makes award-winning quilts in the Baltimore Album style, by hand, and they are absolutely gorgeous. She will be here on Saturday, September 14, at 3 to give a lecture about her work. The lecture is free, but please register online, by phone, or in the shop so we know how many people to expect. Thanks!

Do you know anyone who would like to learn how to sew? We are offering a beginning sewing class, “Learn to Sew”, on Saturday, September 28, from 1-4. The students will learn how to thread and use their sewing machine, how to sew a straight line and a curved line, and make a pillowcase.

The next Capital Quilts Complete Course of Quilting, our 10-week long everything-you-need-to-know-about-quilting class, begins next Wednesday, on September 11. There are 2 classes, one in the afternoon, from 2-4, and one in the evening, from 6:30-8:30. Sign up for one or the other online, by phone, or in the shop.

Thank you for shopping at Capital Quilts!

Go ‘n’ piece,
Alison

CLASSES:
Register for classes online, in the shop, or by calling 301-527-0598. Please register early; we need at least 3 people to make a class happen. If the class is cancelled by Capital Quilts, you will get a refund of the class fee. If you let us know you can't make it at least 8 days before the class, you will get a store credit of the class fee. Cancellations 7 or fewer days before the class are not refundable, but you can try to find someone to take your place. If there is a waiting list, we'll try to help with that. The Supply List for each class may be found on our website at the lower left-hand corner of the class page. You may have to scroll down to find it.

Karen Fricke is teaching her popular Beaded Sampler class starting on Friday, September 6 at 2:30pm. You can add interest and excitement to quilts, bags, clothing, buttons, and more. Make a 9-patch block (or purchase one from the instructor) and fill each piece with a different beaded stitch. You’ll go home with a sampler and printed directions for making each stitch. Your class kit included beads, beading thread, beading needle, pages of instructions, and a metal ring to bind your booklet.

Want to finish your own quilts? Take Getting Started: The Handi Quilter Longarm on Friday, September 6, 6-9. Barbara Bean will go over the basic functions and maintenance of the Amara and Forte machines. Completion of this class enables you to rent our machines to quilt your own quilts.

If you are comfortable with the basics of ProStitcher and would like to learn more, register for Custom Quilting with ProStitcher on Sunday, September 8, 1-4. Elyse will go over how to fit quilting designs to blocks, triangles, sashing, and borders; how to size, align, and skew; crop out areas of the quilting design for appliques and embroideries; and fitting border corners and “chunking” borders.

Elyse is back on September 10 to teach Art & Stitch: Getting Started. She will go over the basics and the most often used tools and techniques and help you create your own Edge-to-Edge quilting pattern. This class is suitable for both beginners and as a skill builder for intermediate users.

The next session of the Capital Quilts Complete Course of Quilting begins on Wednesday, September 11. There are two times available: the afternoon, 2-4, and the evening, 6:30-8:30. Choose one of the two. Jan Wisor teaches the afternoon course and Betsy Kulamer the evening one.

Here is a fun new table runner to make. The Take Five Table Runner is based on 5” squares. You can adjust the size by adding or subtracting squares. Best of all, there are no seams to match! Pam Blodgett teaches this great project on Thursday, September 12, 10:30-12:30.

Don't have enough room in your house to easily sandwich a quilt? Bring your top, backing, batting, and supplies to CQ and we will help you sandwich that quilt in no time! Sandwich Night is September 13th. Make your appointment now for one of the two remaining slots!

In Longarm Rulers 101, you will learn the basics of safe handling and working with longarm rulers. Try a variety of rulers, including the straight edge, stitch-in-the-ditch, and VersaTool rulers.  Longarm experience is required for this class on Saturday, September 14th at 11am.

Join Kat at Night Owl Sewing for up to six blissful hours of stress-free sewing!  Starting at 6:00pm on Saturday, September 14th, and going until midnight, Kat will play hostess.  She offers pizza, beverages, and a $10 gift card to round out your exclusive shopping and sewing time.

On Sunday, September 15th at noon, you can help make quilts for the Interfaith Works Women's Shelter.  Because quilts can mean so much… warmth, love, hugs, comfort, home.

If you've mastered longarm free-motion quilting, and are ready to take your skills to the next level, take Getting Started: the Basics of ProStitcher Premium on Sunday, September 15th at 1pm.  Learn the basic buttons and tools, how to customize edge-to-edge designs on your computer to fit any quilt size, and how to transfer the design to the ProStitcher Premium on the longarm for accurate stitch out. Elyse teaches this class meeting Sunday, September 15th at 1pm.  Please make an appointment to install the ProStitcher Premium Simulator on your laptop computer by calling or emailing Capital Quilts at least one week before class.

CAPITAL QUILTS CARES:

All events are free and fabric is provided. You need bring only your sewing machine, neutral thread, and sewing supplies. Please register for each workshop so that we know how many to expect. Coming up:

Interfaith Works Women's Center Quilts: Sunday, September 15, from 12-3. Join Billye and Lori to make quilts for the women at the shelter.

Ryan's Case for Smiles: Help us make pillowcases for Ryan's Case for Smiles, a volunteer organization solely dedicated to helping kids feel better to heal better. While other great organizations focus on research and finding a cure, they work to improve the quality of life of children and their families as they undergo treatment. Colorful, fun pillowcases are a part of this mission to give children an emotional boost and remind them that they are not defined by their illness. Friday, September 20, at 10:30am.

Quilt of Valor: These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country. Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor. Joining the workshop this month is Eleanor Balaban, who will have a Show & Tell with some of her quilts (she won 2 ribbons at MoCo Fair in August).  Eleanor will then lead the group in a quilt pattern called Diabolical Jane with patriotic fabrics.

Small Kennel Quilts: We are always accepting small kennel quilts, and we always have free basic kits available for you to take home to make and return to us. (They're great stashbusters, too!) They are a perfect little project for practicing your quilting skills! We receive requests from shelters for completed kennel quilts on a frequent basis, and hurricane season is here!  We just got requests today for shelters taking animals displaced by Hurricane Dorian, and will be shipping to them tomorrow.
