What's New at CQ 1/30/2024

Dear Friends,

Are your UFOs dragging you down? We know the feeling! It can be overwhelming to face a number of unfinished projects. We are here to help! Introducing the AREA 51 UFO CLUB! The concept is simple: register for a nominal fee ($5) and provide a list of ten UFOs at the start of the program. The goal is to complete (piecing the quilt top OR finish the whole quilt) by the first Sunday of the following month. This club starts now, and runs through the end of the year! Show us proof by bringing it in or sending us a photo, and earn incentive discounts! We have added a number of weekday Open Sew sessions to help you find dedicated sewing time.

Also, did you know it is NEVER too late to register for any of our clubs? While online registration does not work after the club has started, we can always override that here in the shop -- just ask!

Every winter, ByAnnie' runs a Local Quilt Shop Contest, created to highlight the efforts of local quilt shops and provide the general public an opportunity to show their appreciation. We encourage you to vote for your favorite at, and hope that it's Capital Quilts! Voting ends February 29th.

Happy Sewing!

Legit Kits puts award winning, beautiful artistic quilts within reach of any quilter who can sew a straight line.  Their crystal clear, unparalleled patterns are printed on the best foundation paper, free of Y seams and thoroughly tested by quilters ranging from beginner to expert.

Which one will you make first?

Chong-a Hwang created the "bioluminescent" Electric Ocean collection for Timeless Treasures in her most popular color palette. We just love the jellyfish!

Have you made a bookcase quilt yet? This pattern shows you how! Choose fabric prints from your stash to create your own bookcase. Select novelty prints with words and objects to decorate the spines of the books and items sitting on the shelves. So cute, and no two end up the same!

Our first Open Sew is scheduled for Thursday, February 1! Start the month off sewing with like-minded quilters in our classroom, without household distractions. After Thursday, expect to see one every two weeks or so.

Relax on Friday nights with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each  month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos. The next session is this Friday, February 2nd.

We have ONE seat available in the morning session of the National Quilt of Valor Sew-in day this Saturday, February 3rd.

Who knew selvages could be so much fun? On February 4th, let Elizabeth show you how to Transform your Selvages!  Save those selvages and turn them into useful quilty projects, both small and big. You will make several different sampler blocks, including the spool block, to turn them into projects of your choice at home.  Shortcut tips and tricks for working with selvages will be covered.

On February 17th, gather up all your unfinished sewing and bring it to Capital Quilts.  Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE!  Kat will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support.

Our January Quilts for Kids workshop was such a success, we are repeating it monthly! The next session is on Wednesday, February 21st. Register, bring your sewing machine and basic supplies, and help us make a quilt!

Looking to longarm your own quilts? We currently have two sessions of Getting Started: The Handi Quilter Longarm Machine with Cynthia, one on 2/26 and one on 2/27.

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit
