What's New at CQ 2/6/2024

Dear Friends,

We love learning new things and supporting the community, and in that spirit we met with one of our longtime customers, Hermine, who will be teaching a new class called Scrappy Balls. A portion of the class fee will go directly towards Blessings in a Backpack, a local non-profit. BIAB mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for local school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry when school meals are not available.

Happy Sewing!

ps. Every winter, ByAnnie' runs a Local Quilt Shop Contest, created to highlight the efforts of local quilt shops and provide the general public an opportunity to show their appreciation. We encourage you to vote for your favorite at, and hope that it's Capital Quilts! Voting ends February 29th.

The Gidget II from Arrow Sewing is a reliable, heavy-duty sewing table designed for quick set-up and easy storage! Gidget II features a 2-position manual sewing lift, steel locking legs, a built-in measuring decal and 2 durable wheels. This is the ultimate retreat table! During February, you can purchase one for yourself for only $239!

Meet inspiring people, "travel" to new places, and experience beautiful quilts with Quiltfolk Magazine.  Issue 29: New Jersey has just come in, and features hundreds of years of New Jersey quilts along with articles on Bisa Butler and Faith Ringold, Mark Lipinski, Daisi Toegel, and more.

Everyone is in agreement this masculine quilt's geometric design and easy technique is appealing to all. And, what a GREAT use for ombre fabrics!

Robert Kaufman has sent us two fabulous bolts of Jennifer Sampou's Chalk and Charcoal in 108" width! These fabrics are printed with a checked/gauze texture that works with almost anything.

Did you know that you can join any of our clubs, even after they've started? While you can't register online, we do have the ability in store to override and get you in. The second meeting of the English Paper Piecing Club is this Saturday, 2/10 at noon. There, you will find wonderful quilters obsessed with EPP and the Slow Stitch. It's amazing to see how many different ways there are to do this type of piecing.

Looking to take our Complete Course of Quilting? There is currently ONE spot available in the session starting Sunday, 2/11. This quilting course teaches everything you need to know to start making your own quilts. This course covers the basics: getting to know your sewing machine, rotary cutting, fabric selection, and a variety of techniques for machine-piecing quilt blocks. You make a sampler quilt and learn to sandwich, quilt, and bind your masterpiece.

Our next Open Sew is scheduled for Thursday, 2/15 at noon. Come on in for sewing time away from household distractions.

On February 17th, gather up all your unfinished sewing and bring it to Capital Quilts.  Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE!  Kat will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support.

Our January Quilts for Kids workshop was such a success, we are repeating it monthly! The next session is on Wednesday, February 21st. Register, bring your sewing machine and basic supplies, and help us make a quilt!

Hand quilting is a time-honored tradition, with beautiful results. Laurie will teach you the basics on Friday, 2/23.

Looking to longarm your own quilts? We currently have two sessions of Getting Started: The Handi Quilter Longarm Machine with Cynthia, one on 2/26 and one on 2/27.

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit
