What's New at CQ 2/27/2024
Well, I got an OVERWHELMINGLY positive response to my scrapbusting question, and I am now busy trying to pin down instructors and dates! Look for a number of scrapbusting classes in the future. I'm hoping for at least one every month. Instructors: if you have a scrap class, please contact me to schedule it! As I write this, we are getting ready to head to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton Roads this weekend (Thursday-Sunday). Don't worry of you can't make it to the show; we left lots of pretty goodies at the shop!
Happy Sewing!
ps. Every winter, ByAnnie's.com runs a Local Quilt Shop Contest, created to highlight the efforts of local quilt shops and provide the general public an opportunity to show their appreciation. We encourage you to vote for your favorite at www.lqscontest.com/vote, and hope that it's Capital Quilts! Voting ends Thursday, February 29th. |

We've gotten in some new patterns from Quiltin' Tia. These are designed to take advantage of precuts! |
We bet most of you bind your quilts (those of you who do) with whatever needle is in your pincushion...well you will love binding with the right needle and this is it!! This needle from Primitive Gatherings is long, thin but will not bend. It also sports a nice big eye to thread a heavier quilting thread that you should be using for binding your quilts that will be used and washed. There are 12 needles in each tube. |
Astronaut quilter Karen Nyberg has created a spectacular set of designs that are featured in the Orbital Sunrise Artisan Batiks 5" charm squares from Robert Kaufman. These batiks draw inspiration from the wonders of space. |
This "wool" tweed from Benartex is actually quilting cotton! We also have a few bolts of flannel in the same pattern. |
The Marrakech Collection from Northcott is a colorful range of fabrics featuring intricate designs and patterns inspired by Moroccan culture. We've got 10" squares and 2.5" strips for you. |
The Gidget II from Arrow Sewing is a reliable, heavy-duty sewing table designed for quick set-up and easy storage! Gidget II features a 2-position manual sewing lift, steel locking legs, a built-in measuring decal and 2 durable wheels. This is the ultimate retreat table! Our next Open Sew is scheduled for Thursday, 2/29 at noon. Come on in for sewing time away from household distractions. |
Sew Together via Zoom! Relax on Friday, 3/1 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos. |
On March 11, we are having a free Quilt of Valor workshop (registration is required due to limited space). These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country in the military. Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor. The group will make one quilt. |
Several people mentioned that they wanted to take the hand quilting class, but it was full. So, we have another scheduled for Wednesday, 3/13! |
The next Get it Done session is scheduled for March 16th. Gather up all your unfinished sewing and bring it to Capital Quilts. Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE! We will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support. |
Register for the free Quilts for Kids workshop on March 20th, and bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies with you to make small comfort quilts for kids in need. All fabric is provided. |
On Saturday, March 30, join Linda as she takes you through the steps to making your very own Laura Heine Collage Quilt! In this class you will learn about the tools for success, collage basics, and recognizing details in fabric that add to your design. Once you finish the Spool of Flowers, you will be ready to tackle other Laura Heine collage projects on your own! |
In this joyful class on April 21st, you’ll learn how to create an original “Scrappy Ball,” using basic embroidery stitches, fabric scraps, thread, yarn, and embellishments. You will leave with one beautifully textured “Scrappy Ball” plus instructions on how to create more at home. Basic sewing skills required. Instructor Hermine Bernstein is donating a portion of class fees to Blessings in a Backpack. BIAB mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for local school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry when school meals are not available. |
Harry is teaching his New York Beauty Table Runner class on April 28th. Paper Piecing allows you to create beautiful sharp angles that you could not easily achieve through traditional piecing. One of my favorite blocks is the New York Beauty, which comes in a variety of patterns. In this class you’ll learn the elements of paper piecing combined with the three-pin method for sewing curves to make a classic New York beauty block. |
