What's New at CQ 3/26/2024

Dear Friends,

You may not know that we have a You Tube Channel, but we do! We are starting to use it; please be patient with us as we get more comfortable being on camera. In addition to the few older videos, we just uploaded a short overview of Elizabeth's portraits, and you will soon see a quick video on how to make your own design wall at home. I've convinced Kat to do a brief video on an intro to English Paper Piecing, too. We are working on other ideas -- what quilting DIYs do you want us to explore?

We need to know if there is an interest in a Summer Kid's Camp, because we need time to secure an instructor and decide on projects now! If you have kids ages 8-14 that would appreciate a week-long sewing camp, drop us a line.

We’ve been approached by Stacy Lee Creative regarding the annual quilt donation drive for Comfort Cases during the month of May, which is National Foster Awareness Month. Is this something you would be interested in? All the charities we support have been suggested by either a customer or a staff member in the past, so we need to gauge interest in Comfort Cases before committing.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

ps. Someone has left a couple of small quilts in our classroom. If you are missing these lovely items, please call Carol!

Products

Windham has sent us In Motion by Melissa Marie Collins. This collection represents the beauty of the natural world around us. It captures the rich tones of fall, the delightful hues of summer, and the beauty of the sky above. Each design is organic in shape, intended to echo the patterns found in nature. And, it goes great with Chalk Texture from Benartex!

From QT Fabrics' designer Sasha, we have Frond Nouveau. Lush, leafy fronds in golden and earthen colors are center stage in picture patches worthy of a frame! Coordinating prints with dramatic color and movement evoke the essence of perfect fall décor.

More Gustav Klimt from Robert Kaufman Fabrics, this time a few golds! Our collection is growing...

If the esthetic of Clover and Dot from Windham Fabrics looks familiar, that's because the designer is Allison Harris, the woman behind Cluck Cluck Sew. She hopes this collection will remind you of laying out on the lawn on a warm afternoon, listening to the bees buzz around and picking the clover flowers, with nothing to do and nowhere else to be. Classic colors, a pop of orange, and playful prints give it a fresh and happy feeling.

Computer generated quilt patterns are cool!  Just ask Libs Elliott, a designer who explores the intersection of technology and traditional craft by using generative design to build handmade quilts. Here are a few of her delightful designs.

Looking for additional storage? How about a cutting mat, ironing board and thread organizer? Meet Kiwi Storage Cabinet – Kangaroo Sewing Furniture’s signature storage caddy! Kiwi is the perfect complement to Kangaroo Sewing Furniture’s 3 signature cabinets. Through April 4, you can get one FREE with the purchase of a Wallaby, Aussie, or Kangaroo & Joey cabinet!

Classes

Looking for some quilting time away from the distractions of home? We have a low-cost Open Sew on Thursday, March 28th. Bring your projects and your machine; we have irons and design walls.

Fussy cutting refers to isolating a single motif, a flower, for example, and cutting your quilt piece with that motif featured. This can result in comething as simple as an I Spy quilt, or as complex as a Kaleidoscope quilt. Join Laurie to learn all about fussy cutting on April 2nd. You will see examples of finished items that use fussy cutting, and learn what/where to cut, how to make a template, marking, etc. Bring an interesting print to explore its possibilities in class.

Relax on April 5th with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting.

Our next Quilt of Valor Workshop is scheduled for April 8. Please consider joining the group to work on a quilt for a veteran. The workshop is free, but registration is required.

Rod's Sharpening Service will be here on April 10th.  Please drop off your items to be sharpened no later than 5pm on Tuesday, April 9th. You will be able to pick them up on the 11th.

On April 12th, learn the ins and outs of the longarm machine and the frame, how to set up for quilting a quilt, what proper tension is, and some basic quilting designs.

Also on April 12th, learn the basic buttons and tools of ProStitcher Premium. Customize Edge-to-Edge (E2E) designs on your computer to fit any quilt size and transfer the design to the ProStitcher on the longarm for accurate stitch out.

Make a Scrappy Pineapple Quilt with Louise on April 20th. Yours can be multicolored like Louise's, or a "traditional" yellow one.  Either way, it will be beautiful!

The next Get It Done will be on Saturday, April 20. Gather up your unfinished projects and bring them to Capital Quilts.  Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE! Kat will be here to help you through any difficult bits.

In this joyful class on April 21st, you’ll learn how to create an original “Scrappy Ball,” using basic embroidery stitches, fabric scraps, thread, yarn, and embellishments. You will leave with one beautifully textured “Scrappy Ball” plus instructions on how to create more at home. Basic sewing skills required. Instructor Hermine Bernstein is donating a portion of class fees to Blessings in a Backpack. BIAB mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for local school-aged children who might otherwise go hungry when school meals are not available.

On April 27th, join Linda for a fun scrap class that is also an introduction to the AccuQuilt cutting system. We will be using an AccuQuilt 8" Qube, giving you 72 possible blocks you can choose from to make your table runner!

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
