What's New at CQ 7/23/2024

Dear Friends,

We've been keeping ourselves busy with hoppers, and I have a question for you. Are you hopping? What stores are you planning on visiting? How many stores are you planning on going to? We've gotten tons of shoppers from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania (a busload today!), and Delaware, and a few from West Virginia. We haven't seen anyone from New Jersey yet, but I know you're out there. Yell out when you're in the shop!

Tips for Shop Hoppers:

When you are here on your hop, don't miss our "Selfie Station", where you can take your photo under the saying "Why yes, we are sewciopaths". And, if you post it to FaceBook or Instagram and tag the shop, you will be entered into both a weekly drawing for a prize valued at approximately $30, and also a Grand Prize Drawing when the Shop Hop ends.

We still have a good amount of most of the Shop Hop fabrics and panels in stock. Don't miss the Nimble Fingers Guild's "Solid Gold" Challenge quilts that are hanging in our Gallery. And, we have a rack with all of our exclusive Capital Quilts patterns for you to peruse.

If you are bringing with you a friend that hasn't been here before, make sure they tell the cashier that it's their first visit. We have a surprise for them!

Be sure to drink plenty of water, eat good food, and do not leave your animals in the car!  We are a dog-friendly shop, so bring them in.

In addition to our prize drawing, our 500th Shop Hopper will receive something super special!

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

Products

We've gotten in a couple of Charley Harper bundles - with panels!  Choose from Monteverde (9 FQs) or Alpine (11 FQs).

Ruby & Bee solids are here! Heather Ross and Annabel Wrigley have come together to collaborate in creating the beautiful Ruby and Bee Solids, for Windham Fabrics. We have 40 gorgeous bolts to choose from.

Sweet Bees 36 inch soft cloth storybook is a fun way to teach your little person to count with Susybee and Sweet Bees. Complete illustrated instructions are included on the printed panel.

The Oklahoma edition of Quiltfolk is here! At the back, on pages 132-141, the Vintage Sewing Center and Museum is featured. This is one of my passion projects. Mr. Binger has created a hands-on museum with sewing machines from every era that people can sit and sew at. What an awesome experience!

We have now made the Thread Labs available as individual month purchases!

Each month offers video learning from industry leaders, exclusive projects, swag, special offers, and a box of thread.  July is now in stock!

The first lab, Lab 2.1, grants early access to the Aurifilosophy Cool Thread Exemplar, a compact spool storage case, and a unique thread tracking booklet. Aurifil Designer Nicholas Ball will lead subscribers through a creative project that utilizes several thread weights included in the Thread Exemplar, while tutoring via exclusive video content to ensure a comprehensive learning experience for all proficiency levels. Subsequent labs will introduce new educators, thread assortments, and innovative techniques, fostering an environment where creativity and skill development flourish.

Classes

Bored with your walking foot and intimidated by full-on free motion quilting? Ruler work is an ideal compromise to create precise yet interesting stitching on your quilts using your domestic machine. In this 5-week Intro to Ruler Work class starting on 7/31, you will make a 9-block sampler of ruler work designs. The class will cover setting up your machine for ruler work, testing tension, and getting started. Each week you’ll make one or two blocks with practice fabric during class; between each class you’ll reproduce the blocks with your sampler fabric. At the end, you’ll learn a quilt-as-you-go method for joining the blocks together.

There are currently two seats available in this popular class.

Relax on Friday, August 2 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

Scrapbuster class alert!  Join Debbie as she guides you in how to use your scraps to make your own Twist and Turn quilt on August 11th.

No matter the time of year, what better way to celebrate the cycles of life than with a wreath?  The Twister Holiday Wreath we will sew in this class lends itself to celebrating any holiday with style. Your fabric selection will depend upon the holiday you wish to celebrate, be it the 4th of July, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter—you decide! Preparing the 3.5” squares in advance of the first class is an option. This quilt finishes at 24.5" square. Janice Wheeler shows you how starting on August 13th.

The Star Storm Mini is built by strategically placing  strips of fabric to form rings around a central pieced inner star. The Star Storm is not foundation paper pieced but formed on large scale paper templates to create the star points. The class will walk step by step through the placement of strips and aligning the angles to form the star. Want to make a full-size Star Storm? No problem! Purchase the regular Star Storm instead, and purchase yardage as per the pattern. This class is also suitable for those who have previously taken a Star Storm quilt class, and want assistance in finishing. This 4-part class starts on August 14th.

Show us how you are inspired by a song with color in it -- either title or lyrics. Your submission should be 18" x 30", have three layers, and be quilted. You may piece, applique, foundation piece, EPP, collage, thread paint, quilt and embellish to your heart's content.  Yes, there will be prizes!  Yes, there will be a Gallery Show! Yes, we will have fun! I might even be convinced to have a party for all those who choose to participate! Submissions are due on or before Labor Day.

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
