What's New at CQ 9/10/24

The "I Got the Music in Me" challenge quilts are in, and they are fantastic! We'll be hanging them in the Gallery next week. We are presenting all the classes for the rest of September and all of October in this newsletter edition. As usual, if you don't see a class that you'd like to take, let me know! Bring your box of fabric scraps to Capital Quilts on September 14th, and let your spirit free! They can be a curated collection or scraps left from a project or just random pieces from your scrap pile. There are no rules in Crumb Quilting. You will learn several techniques to combine scraps to create new fabric for future projects.

Come and sew for an afternoon on 9/15 to create this Scrappy Checkerboard Chain, a scrap-busting baby quilt! This is a great way to use fabric left over from a project or just random pieces from your scrap bins.

Join Capital Quilts Cares to make quilts for kids on September 18th and on October 16th. The session is free, and all fabric is provided. Just register for the workshop and show up with your sewing machine and lots of energy!

Get it Done for September is scheduled for Saturday, 9/21. Enjoy four hours of distraction-free sewing in our classroom. Kat will be on hand to help you over any rough spots.

Elizabeth has developed a portable design tote, perfect for laying out your pieces with a great pocket to keep them together. Make one for yourself on Sunday, 9/22.

Join Mari for our Project Dress a Girl Sew-in on September 27! These dresses are given to girls living in poverty, both in the U.S. and around the world. A girl wearing new dress presents an appearance that she is well cared for and may discourage would-be predators. Since we attach a Dress a Girl label on the outside of each dress, it sends an additional message that each girl is under the care of an organization, giving her added protection from those who would harm her, predators or traffickers.

We've had one spot open up in Betsy's popular Walking Foot 101 Classon September 29th. Put your walking foot to work and watch it travel miles and miles of stitching! Learn the basics of using your walking foot by making nine sample blocks. In this class, you will: install your walking foot, test thread tension, learn to start and stop; learn several methods for marking a design on your quilt sandwich; and

Debra has made another Sew Wonderful pattern, and she can't wait to share it with you in class starting 10/2. Metro Hoops is similar to a double wedding ring, but the hoops do not interlock. It's a very modern look!

Linda is known for her collage quilts, amongst other things. She is teaching the Haunted House Collage by Laura Heine starting 10/9.

On 10/9, Karen Kehl is here with her class, Scrap Swap: Playing with Colors. This class will help you play with colors, either those you like best or those you avoid. At the end of class, you will end up with a small panel, suitable for making a small wall hanging, pillow, or tote panel.

HANDI QUILTER EDUCATION WEEKEND Saturday, October 19 10 AM - 1 PM Does longarm quilting interest you, and you'd like to learn more about it? Or do you just want a review of longarm quilting basics? This class removes the mystery of longarm quilting by explaining machine and frame elements and features, how to load a quilt, and vital facts about thread, needles, and tension. Handi Quilter longarm machine and frame systems come in various sizes for every budget and are user-friendly because they were designed by a quilter, for quilters - just like you!
2 PM - 5 PM Have you ever wanted to break away from your basic quilting and really see what your longarm can do? You piece, quilt on unique fabric, apply binding to your quilts, and a lot of other great time saving techniques on your longarm. Find out what a longarm can really do and get ready to get more projects done.
Sunday, October 20 11 AM - 4 PM Pro-Stitcher Principles In Simulation Pro-Stitcher is an intuitive computer-guided quilting system designed especially for use with Handi Quilter longarm quilting machines. User-friendly and simple to operate, the step-by-step process for each function is easy and fun. Whether finishing your own quilts or considering a business, come and see the elegant and precise quilting you can accomplish with Pro-Stitcher. New users - this is where you start! You may bring your own laptop with the Pro-Stitcher simulation loaded to follow along with the class.
Monday, October 21 11 AM - 4 PM Exploring Pro-Stitcher Designer Lecture Demonstration Pro-Stitcher Designer is a full featured, vector-based drawing software which gives you the ability to quickly design, edit, customize, export and import any quilting motif you can imagine. This class will start with a basic overview of the easy-to-use features. New users will be creating their own digital designs for their next quilting project by the end of this class! Please come to class with Designer preloaded on your laptop. |

The October Quilts of Valor session is scheduled for 10/21. One seat is available in the morning; many seats are available in the afternoon.

Weave strips of fabric together to create a snowflake ornament to hang on the tree, a wreath, the mantle, or other decorative endeavor! You can also use these snowflakes in place of a bow on a gift. Once you know how you'll want to make more. Class is October 26.

Have you ever looked at a quilt block or whole quilt and wondered how it was put together? In this class on 10/26 you will learn how to draft a variety of blocks in different sizes and how to make templates so you can stitch that block. If you have a particular block that you'd like to draft, bring a picture of it, and Laurie will help you solve the puzzle.

Debra Ball is back teaching how to make a T-Shirt Quilt starting October 27th. Yes, you CAN finish it in time for gift-giving.

We will soon have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster.
