What's New at CQ 10/1/24

Dear Friends,

Summer is over, and Helene missed Maryland, so let's celebrate! Our version of Octoberfest starts Friday, 10/11 and runs through Sunday, 10/13. Sorry, no beer at our fest, unless you count the drinks depicted on fabric! Oh, and it'll be a sale, too! I'm letting you know now so that you can plan for next weekend.

During our Octoberfest, take 15% off all in-stock, regularly priced merchandise. If you bring in an unexpired, non-perishible food item, you can take 20% off your purchase! All the regular rules apply: no machines, special orders, books, services, classes, or furniture are allowed.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

Products

I could not resist these adorable tiny ducks, squirrels, and rabbits from Andover Fabrics' Mayfair collection.

When we were in Fredericksburg last weekend, we brought back with us bolts to restock Serious Whimsey by P. Carter Carpin. Many of these are new prints for our shop.

Next up is Birdie by Libs Elliott for Andover Fabrics. Birdie is a heartfelt nod to being born in the 1970's and a nickname that Libs' father affectionately called her. Let your imagination run wild, embrace the retro vibes, and let Birdie take you on a journey back in time. The possibilities are endless, and the memories you'll create will be timeless.

Guicy Guice's idea for the next collection came from a video he had seen of an iceberg collapse. As he describes it, "The idea for Deco Frost came from a video I had seen a few months back of an iceberg collapse. In the video, the most otherworldly and vivid blue color is revealed as the iceberg's bummock flips to the surface. The beautiful ombre of the berg's icy white tip darkening in its cobalt hue as the base crests the waterline...It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. I knew I wanted to make a collection that would try to emulate the incredible color I saw in that video. Expanding the palette to include purple and black, the pigments will radiate off the fabric in this wintry collection."

Also from Andover is Micro Dots. These teeny-tiny pindots on assorted neutrals are lovely! Use them for backgrounds, acccents, or make them the main feature, like the Cascade quilt does.

Mari has made the CUTEST leather pincushions! Choose from Pac-man ghosts in two colors, pink hearts, or the voodoo doll (Kat's favorite).

Classes

Relax on 10/4 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

Linda is known for her collage quilts, amongst other things. She is teaching the Haunted House Collage by Laura Heine starting 10/9.

CQ Cares: Quilts for Kids meets October 16th. Register, bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies to the workshop, and help make a quilt that will be donated to kids in need. All fabric is provided.

Registration is required.

Join Kathy from Ryan's Case for Smiles and sew some fun pillowcases on October 25th. Two sessions are available.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) was founded in 2007 to bring comfort and support to young patients and their families in hospitals around the globe. We started with a simple goal: to create and distribute whimsical pillowcases that give children an emotional boost and remind them that they are not defined by their illness.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THIS FREE EVENT as space is limited.

Bring your sewing machine with power cord and foot pedal, new needle installed.

You should also bring basic sewing supplies, including rotary cutter & long ruler, thread snips, neutral thread, and pins or clips.

You may bring your own fabric if you like; we will have some fabric available in the workshop (at no cost).

Weave strips of fabric together to create a snowflake ornament to hang on the tree, a wreath, the mantle, or other decorative endeavor! You can also use these snowflakes in place of a bow on a gift. Once you know how you'll want to make more. Class is October 26.

Have you ever looked at a quilt block or whole quilt and wondered how it was put together? In this class on 10/26 you will learn how to draft a variety of blocks in different sizes and how to make templates so you can stitch that block.  If you have a particular block that you'd like to draft, bring a picture of it, and Laurie will help you solve the puzzle.

So much to do on 10/27!  Starting with the EPP (English Paper Piecing) Club, who invites you to a demo of the technique. Stitchers often become quickly addicted to EPP for its versatility, accuracy, and portability. Club members will be on hand to enthusiastically answer all of your questions.

Debra Ball is back teaching how to make a T-Shirt Quilt starting October 27th. Yes, you CAN finish it in time for gift-giving.

Also on October 27th, Elizabeth is teaching a whimsical Floral Collage class -- guaranteed to be fun and get your creativity flowing.

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster (Like Helene!). To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
