What's New at CQ 10/8/24

Dear Friends,

A few customers have approached me, asking if we will be collecting quilts for the victims of Helene. In answer, I will share a quote from a quilt shop owner in Ashville, NC, "I have had many people reach out about sending quilts to help people. We are grateful for the amazingly generous spirt of quilters!! Now is NOT the time to send quilts. Now is the time to send resources." Many in the affected area are still without basic needs like food, water, shelter, electricity, medical supplies, pet supplies, etc. For the time being, we have switched our "Kennel Quilt shipping Jar" to a "Storm Relief Jar". All monies collected will be forwarded to Operation Airdrop, a volunteer-based organization that provides rapid response aid to communities impacted by large-scale natural disasters. They use general aviation resources to deliver essential supplies to areas that are otherwise difficult to access by road, especially in the initial days following a disaster.

That said, we ARE accepting Kennel Quilts. We are getting almost daily requests following Helene, and Milton will soon be upon Florida. If you can, please pick up a free kit or use your stash at home to make these little 12" x 18" quilts. Link to patterns at the end of the newsletter.

Don't forget our Octoberfest from 10/11-10/13! Take 15% off all in-stock, regularly priced merchandise. If you bring in an unexpired, non-perishable food item, you can take 20% off your purchase! All the regular rules apply: no machines, special orders, books, services, classes, or furniture are allowed.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

The designers of the Kasumi collection for Makower UK were inspired by the elegant beauty of a Japanese garden. The group contains delicate florals, traditional koi, and timeless motifs in a palette of deep indigo, teals, and creams with accents of soft pinks and reds, accented with metallic gold ink details. We hope that Kasumi will add a sense of serene natural beauty to any project.

Since Be a Superhero and Be a Mermaid have been such a hit, we've received more of the Sew A Story Imagination Quilt Pattern Series patterns. Now your child can be a medical professional, a firefighter, a police officer, or an elf! There is also a really cute Santa going headfirst down the chimney!

From Felicity Fabrics, we have two small but lovely collections. The first is Golden Afternoon, when the sun is high in the sky and the flowers and butterflies dance together.

Next up, little critters are getting ready for the cold weather, gathering acorns and berries, as the orange and yellow leaves float down to the ground in Autumn Bursting by Kimberly Morgan.

I know we just showed you new Guicy Guice last week, but he's a busy fellow! Here are Century Grays from Andover. None of them are showstoppers, but they all play supporting roles beautifully. Or, put them all together for a modern urban look like in the After Midnight quilt.

Also from Andover is Libs Elliott's Glaze II blender. We have all 24 colors! Check out the free Paradise Quilt pattern for this group.

From Robert Kaufman, we have several bolts from the Artful Blooms collection. We happened to notice that they pair beautifully with Glaze II!

From Robert Kaufman, Wine Country is a collection of batiks that will transport you to sun-drenched Napa Valley and all it has to offer. Available in either 5" charm squares or 2 1/2" strips.

More of Jennifer Sampou's Sky has arrived from Robert Kaufman. We love these ombres with a hand-painted feel to them. The computer screen does not do these gorgeous fabrics justice -- you may just have to come in and see them in person!

The October Quilts of Valor session is scheduled for 10/21. These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country in the military. Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor. The group will make one quilt. All fabric is provided. Just bring your sewing machine, supplies, and lots of energy! Afternoon seats are available. Registration is required.

Join Kathy from Ryan's Case for Smiles and sew some fun pillowcases on October 25th. Two sessions are available.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) was founded in 2007 to bring comfort and support to young patients and their families in hospitals around the globe. We started with a simple goal: to create and distribute whimsical pillowcases that give children an emotional boost and remind them that they are not defined by their illness.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THIS FREE EVENT as space is limited.

Bring your sewing machine with power cord and foot pedal, new needle installed.

You should also bring basic sewing supplies, including rotary cutter & long ruler, thread snips, neutral thread, and pins or clips.

You may bring your own fabric if you like; we will have some fabric available in the workshop (at no cost).

Have you ever looked at a quilt block or whole quilt and wondered how it was put together? In this class on 10/26 you will learn how to draft a variety of blocks in different sizes and how to make templates so you can stitch that block.  If you have a particular block that you'd like to draft, bring a picture of it, and Laurie will help you solve the puzzle.

So much to do on 10/27!  Starting with the EPP (English Paper Piecing) Club, who invites you to a demo of the technique. Stitchers often become quickly addicted to EPP for its versatility, accuracy, and portability. Club members will be on hand to enthusiastically answer all of your questions.

Debra Ball is back teaching how to make a T-Shirt Quilt starting October 27th. Yes, you CAN finish it in time for gift-giving.

Also on October 27th, Elizabeth is teaching a whimsical Floral Collage class -- guaranteed to be fun and get your creativity flowing.

Relax on the evening of Friday, 11/1 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster (Like Helene!). To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
