What's New at CQ 10/22/24

Dear Friends,

I really wish the weather would pick a season. I don't know about your house, but my furry children are getting sick. I open the window when I leave for work over 70, and the kids are freezing at 50 when I get home. Before it gets really cold, why not come in and take a class so you have something to work on when the horrible snow comes? Yes, it will come.

What classes did you miss taking that you'd like us to offer again? Based on feedback, we'll have another Twister Wreath class, and another T-Shirt quilt class. Let us know what you want to take, and we'll do our best to make a class happen.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

Morse Code Quilts shows how to use Morse code to customize your quilts with secret messages and hidden meanings. A baby quilt can contain the child's name and birthday, or a wedding quilt might feature the happy couple's names along with the date of their vows. Morse Code Quilts offers ten projects that express the aesthetic of modern quilts, including a wall hanging stating "The Adventure Begins," a rainbow quilt that says "Love is Love," and a graduation quilt coded "The World Awaits."

You saw the widebacks last week, and now we have more of the Phantasma fabric collection from Robert Kaufman Fabrics is inspired by intricate honeycomb patterns. Enhance your next quilting project with this stunning abstract fabric featuring packed hexagons, stars, triangles, and ray bursts.

Let the 2025 Kona Cotton Wall Calendar color your days with constant inspiration throughout the year. Each and every day has been assigned a gorgeous Kona Cotton color. The inspiration quilt shown each month is available as a free download from the Robert Kaufman website. The cover quilt is actually a block of the month pattern that you can purchase separately!

Also from Robert Kaufman are these brilliant citrusy batiks with dotty designs.

Looking for "girly" cork fabric? We've got you covered! (We have lots of non-pink cork also in stock.)

Classes

Join Kathy from Ryan's Case for Smiles and sew some fun pillowcases on October 25th. Two sessions are available.

Ryan’s Case for Smiles (formerly ConKerr Cancer) was founded in 2007 to bring comfort and support to young patients and their families in hospitals around the globe. We started with a simple goal: to create and distribute whimsical pillowcases that give children an emotional boost and remind them that they are not defined by their illness.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THIS FREE EVENT as space is limited.

Bring your sewing machine with power cord and foot pedal, new needle installed.

You should also bring basic sewing supplies, including rotary cutter & long ruler, thread snips, neutral thread, and pins or clips.

You may bring your own fabric if you like; we will have some fabric available in the workshop (at no cost).

Have you ever looked at a quilt block or whole quilt and wondered how it was put together? In this class on 10/26 you will learn how to draft a variety of blocks in different sizes and how to make templates so you can stitch that block. Only one seat left!

So much to do on 10/27!  Starting with the EPP (English Paper Piecing) Club, who invites you to a demo of the technique. Stitchers often become quickly addicted to EPP for its versatility, accuracy, and portability. Club members will be on hand to enthusiastically answer all of your questions.

Debra Ball is back teaching how to make a T-Shirt Quilt starting October 27th. Yes, you CAN finish it in time for gift-giving.

Also on October 27th, Elizabeth is teaching a whimsical Floral Collage class -- guaranteed to be fun and get your creativity flowing.

Relax on the evening of Friday, 11/1 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

On November 8th, gather up all your unfinished sewing and bring it to Capital Quilts.  Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE!  Kat will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support.

Help make quilts for Veterans on Veterans' Day! Our Quilts of Valor Group meets monthly to work on a quilt to be awarded to a service member touched by war. Morning and afternoon sessions are available.

Rod's Sharpening Service will pick up scissors, knives, and garden tools for sharpening on 11/13.

Items MUST be brought in on or before the 12th.

For everyone's safety, all items must be packaged/wrapped securely with rubber bands or packing tape securing the item in a towel, pillowcase, padded envelope, or box.  Attach your name, address, phone number, and cash or check payable to Rod's Sharpening Service.

Fabric shears, pinking shears, household scissors:  $7.00
Beauty salon shears:  $25.00
Any type of knife:  $7.00
Small garden tools (less than 12 inches):  $7.00

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com

This week alone we sent out 120 to shelters taking in pets displaced by recent hurricanes.
