What's New at CQ 10/29/24

Dear Friends,

Starting November 1st and going through the end of the year, every time you shop in-store, you can fill out a slip to be entered into a drawing to be held on January 2nd for a $75 Capital Quilts Gift Card. This card can be used towards anything in the store, including classes! This is in addition to our regular monthly Blue Bag drawing.

Have you heard of Merry Pin in DC? It's a craft store, cafe, and community space combined, located at 7350 Georgia Ave NW. They offer products, workshops & experiences, and snacks and beverages to bring people together.

If going into DC isn't your thing, why not check out the Quilting Divas at Olney Library? This friendly group of quilters meets in person on the first Wednesday of the month, from 2-4. No experience is needed, just an interest to learn and share. Bring a project for show & tell. New Divas are always welcome. Questions about this program? Contact Olney Library at 240-773-9545.

We are thinking of starting a Fat Quarter Club for 2025, that would meet every other month. Let me know if you're interested.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

Products

The Grinch is back! We have gotten in the popular Grinch Advent Calendar panel. These sold out in record time last year!

New-to-us patterns are here from Quiltin' Tia. Wrapped and Stellar View use the A-OK 5 finger method of fabric selection: One large scale print, one medium scale print, one light, one medium, one dark. In many, you can use either a panel or that gorgeous print you can't bear to cut into.

Do you have an AccuQuilt Go? Do you want to make hats? We have not one, but TWO different hat dies available! Make the trucker hat, the bucket hat, or cover all your bases and get both!

U.S. Highway 66 -- popularly known as Route 66 or the Mother Road -- holds an elevated place in American culture and tells tales of a mobile nation on the road. Discover (or revisit!) this shared heritage with these fabrics from Hoffman that celebrate reminders of our past and the influence the automobile has had on both our lives and the nation.

Also from Hoffman are these two amazingly detailed photographic panels. I love the cow, and want to escape to that cabin!

From Kylie and the Machine, we have more "Sweary Sewist" labels, and the labels are NOT censored. Choose from "I Didn't F**k it Up" or "Finally F**king Finished". Other labels are also available!

Kylie has developed a glue stick to aid in label sewing. If you're sick of pins getting in your way, this is an absolute must-have! It will hold labels better than pins, and you can sew straight over the label without worrying about your needle breaking or gumming up.

We've also reordered Fabric ID Tape! You'll never have to wonder 'have I already pre-washed this?' or 'what fiber is this fabric?' ever again...

Classes

Relax on the evening of Friday, 11/1 with fellow quilters for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

Most of us have a hard time basting our quilts because we do not have large table spaces available. We've solved that problem by setting up times where we can baste your quilt for you! Two Sandwiching dates in November are available: the 5th and the 12th.

On November 8th, gather up all your unfinished sewing and bring it to Capital Quilts.  Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE!  Kat will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support.

Help make quilts for Veterans on Veterans' Day! Our Quilts of Valor Group meets monthly to work on a quilt to be awarded to a service member touched by war. Morning and afternoon sessions are available.

Rod's Sharpening Service will pick up scissors, knives, and garden tools for sharpening on 11/13.

Items MUST be brought in on or before the 12th.

For everyone's safety, all items must be packaged/wrapped securely with rubber bands or packing tape securing the item in a towel, pillowcase, padded envelope, or box.  Attach your name, address, phone number, and cash or check payable to Rod's Sharpening Service.

Fabric shears, pinking shears, household scissors:  $7.00
Beauty salon shears:  $25.00
Any type of knife:  $7.00
Small garden tools (less than 12 inches):  $7.00

Sharpened items will be available for pickup on the 14th.

Posh Penelope is one of the fabulous patterns from Sew Kind of Wonderful. Debra will walk you through all the ins and outs of the pattern and using the Sew Wonderful rulers in this daytime, two part class starting 11/19. It's a great stashbuster!

On November 20th, we are offering a free workshop to work on charity quilts for kids. Just register for a seat, then bring your machine and basic sewing supplies to class. We provide all fabric.

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop, please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
