What's New at CQ 1/14/2025

Dear Friends,

We have a few more classes on the calendar, with more coming in the near future. Elizabeth is working on some new things that we think you'll love!

If you are interested in going to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton Roads, the Uhuru Quilt Guild makes it a breeze with their deluxe bus transportation!  The day begins with a 7:00 a.m. pickup at 6009 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill MD, right behind the IHOP Pancake House. Enjoy a comfortable ride to the event, and after a day of exploration, we will depart at 4:00 p.m., returning you to Maryland by approximately 8:30 p.m.  Interested? Fill out their registration form: Registration form UHURU Bus Trip

In the past, various guilds have asked us to support their opportunity quilt raffle. We have done so by providing a coupon for a discount at Capital Quilts to be printed on the back of the raffle tickets. If your guild is interested in this, please reach out to me!

I've been thinking about having a sale the first week of February. What would you like to see put on sale? All answers received before midnight on Friday, 1/17 will be put into a basket. I'll draw five names, and each customer drawn will receive a free fat quarter.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

Products

Coastal Calm by Amy MacCready for Cloud9 Fabrics evokes warm sea breezes and changing tides. With its soft neutral florals, natural motifs, and marshland birds, you can practically hear waves lapping at the shore.

Cloud9 recommends their Just Dotty pattern to showcase this collection.

Also from Cloud9 is Vintage Charm by Popeia Herzog of Dots and Glory. This collection infuses a playful blend of cute and elegant motifs - florals, whimsical birds, and timeless patterns. The soft pastel palette evokes nostalgia, inviting creators to reimagine timeless elegance with a touch of whimsy.

Try Vintage Charm in the free Twirl pattern!

Quiltex has sent us Jewelry Box by Isoletto Designs for Phoebe Fabrics, where abstract retro geometrics rule.

We've gotten in some bolts of Amanda Murphy's Cotton Shot From Benartex. We've had the same blender in pearlized ink that has been quite popular, and we think these will be a great addition to our color walls.

Classes

There is still time to register for the Wagon Wheel class that starts Wednesday, 1/15. Wagon Wheel is a quilt that is timeless, quirky and graphic. The large scale of the blocks makes for a fast finish. Not only can you showcase your favorite prints, but it's also FQ friendly! NO CURVED PIECING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! The class meets once a month for three months. Three seats are available.

Did you know that we offer sandwiching (quilt basting) services? You can make an appointment, drop off your quilt top, backing, batting, and either basting pins or spray baste, and get back a quilt sandwich ready for you to finish on your domestic machine!

Get it Done is back! Gather up your unfinished sewing  projects and bring them to Capital Quilts on January 31st. Enjoy time you can dedicate to getting those projects DONE! We will be here to offer suggestions, guidance, and support.

Join Linda and the QOV group on 2/1 to make a Quilt of Valor. These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country in the military.  Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor.  The group will make one quilt.  All fabric is provided.  Just register for either the morning or the afternoon session, then bring your sewing machine, supplies, and lots of energy!

Relax with fellow quilters on the evening of Friday, 2/7 for a virtual quilting bee. Settle into your favorite sewing space with your favorite Zoom-compatible technology for 2 hours of stitching and chatting. Everyone will have a chance to talk about what they’ve been working on and pose questions to the other quilters. Each month, a guest speaker shares her enthusiasm for an aspect of quilting – a designer, a technique, a hot topic -- with lots of inspiring ideas and photos.

Come in on 2/12 to work on Quilts for Kids. All fabric is provided. These quilts are donated to local kids in need. Lots of fun is always the rule in our free Capital Quilts workshops.

Come make a quilted half apron with deep pockets, custom sized to fit. Elizabeth will walk you through her pattern that calls for simple sewing and simple quilting. Easy bias binding will be covered. These aprons are SO CUTE! Half the staff has made one or more for themselves. Class starts 2/18.

NEW CLASS ALERT! Linda is offering a Reversible Bucket Hat class on 4/12.  In class you will have the option to cut out your fabric by hand, or you can use the Accuquilt die. The pattern is included with the class. Be warned: they're like potato chips. Once you make one...

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

For those who want to sew placemats for Meals on Wheels and/or Iona House from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern. We also have free kits in the shop.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
