What's New at CQ 3/18/25

Dear Friends,

The calendar says that Spring starts this week, and if the highs yesterday and today are any indication, it's right on track. It's been cold for so long, and I've been longing for spring to come. How about you?

We are hard at work making models and kits for our soon-to-be-announced scrapbuster quilt class! I have always struggled with the idea of scrappy. I just can't do it. I've tried, honest! Controlled scrappy is the best I can do, and I still find myself taking things out.

Jan has developed a following, and tries to offer a modern quilt every so often for her Complete Course students to hone their skills on. Of course, she allows others to participate! In April, she starts teaching Upscale Plaid from Lo & Behold Stitchery. Her model is wonderful, and she's already got another planned. See details below.

Happy Sewing!

-Marianne

ps. We will continue collecting old sneakers through the month of March. There is a tub just inside the front door for dropping them off. Please be sure to follow the posted guidelines: sneakers ONLY, dirty is OK, ripped, holey, or soles coming off is not.

Products

Cloud 9 is one of my favorite fabric manufacturers. Everything they make is organic cotton. Here, we have Naturally Wild by Ann Gardner. These fabrics pair nicely with some of the other Cloud 9 lines, too.

They took the breezy print and made a 108" wide back.

They've recommended two of their free patterns for this collection: Amsterdam Quilt Project and the Sweetheart Quilt.

Also from Cloud 9 is Stars, Stripes, & Sun by Krissy Mast. This patriotic collection has a vintage feel to it, and is perfect for your summer projects.

Try the Twirl Project Quilt with this collection!

Flora Bowley's newest fabric collection for P&B Textiles reflects her belief that creative expression is a vehicle for collective healing and self-discovery.  Her layered, watercolor style of art is soft yet makes a big impact.

From P&B's Chicken Scratch collection, we snagged these two "Drunkard's Path" fabrics and this fabulous texty print.

Classes

Come in on 3/19 to work on Quilts for Kids. All fabric is provided. These quilts are donated to local kids in need. Lots of fun is always the rule in our free Capital Quilts workshops. Different patterns are used each month.

On April 8th, join our Quilt of Valor group to work on a quilt to be awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.  The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.” All fabric is provided, and patterns change often. PLEASE NOTE: This workshop was originally scheduled for the 7th, but we've had to move it due to a conflict.

The April 13 session of Walking Foot 101 is sold out. There is currently one seat in the June 29 class, and July 27th has 5 seats open. In class, you will install your walking foot, test thread tension, learn several methods for marking a design on your quilt sandwich, and fill six squares with different walking foot designs.

Upscale Plaid is one of the patterns we showed you last week. Jan will be teaching this pattern starting on 4/16.

Get it Done! for April is on the 26th. Bring your project and your machine for four hours of distraction-free sewing. Kat will be here to help with any rough spots.

Awed by the way her first class filled up, Linda is teaching the Reversible Bucket Hat again on 4/30. In class you will have the option to cut out your fabric by hand, or you can use the Accuquilt die. The pattern is included with the class. Two seats are available.

Celebrate May Day by making your very own Scrap Petal Garden! Kat teaches this popular pattern starting on May 1st. Class is loads of fun as students weigh in on fabric choices and layouts. Scrappy background kits are available!

CQ Cares (Community Sewing Projects)

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

For those who want to sew placemats for Meals on Wheels and/or Iona House from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern. We also have free kits in the shop.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
