What's New at CQ 3/10/26

Dear Friends,

Did you go to QuiltCon? I was just reading a blog post talking about quilting trends found there this year - using black & white with bold colors. This esthetic is right up my alley! I then went over to QuiltCon's website to view the winners, and while the black, white, and color trend had low representation in the winners, there was lots to like!

I really like the quilts with bold color, and with movement, but my favorite out of all the winners is "Frances" by Jeanne Eileen Garcia. I am also partial to Racing Stripes, Zanfirico, and Tinker Toys. And Wilson's Picnic Day in the Children's category. Kat favors Drunkard's Orange Peel. Which are your favorites?

Happy Sewing!

Autograph from Anthology Batiks features signatures, scribbles, and X's and O's in a palette of red, charcoal, cream, and silver.

Lewis & Irene has sent us six bolts from Stuart Hillard's Porcelain & Sea Glass, a fabric collection inspired by time-worn pottery shards and the luminous quality of sea glass.

From Robert Kaufman, we have five Confetti Batiks.

By request, I have brought in more 1" cotton webbing.

Just in from Sew Kind of Wonderful:

The Breezeway pattern uses the Quick Straight Ruler.

And Soft Focus uses the Wonder Curve Ruler.

Classes

Three seats are available in the March 16 Quilt of Valor afternoon Workshop. All fabric is provided, simply register, bring your machine & sewing toolkit, and join the group to make a quilt for a veteran!

Gain the confidence to do it yourself on March 17th! Learn the parts of the longarm machine and the frame, how to load your backing, batting and top in preparation for quilting, how to thread the machine, how to adjust for proper tension, and some basic quilting designs. One seat is available.

Completion of this class is required before you will be allowed to rent time on the shop's longarms.

If you've got basic longarming down, and want to use the computer for stitching instead of free motion, you will need to take Getting Started: ProStitcher Premium, also on March 17th. There is one seat available.

Jan is such a fun, encouraging instructor, and the Adventureland Quilt (pattern included with class fee) is a fast and easy strip piecing design, perfect for the confident beginner or a seasoned quilter that wants a quick baby/throw quilt to gift. The last session will focus on making the Scottie Dog pattern, provided for free by Denyse Schmidt Quilts. This three-session class starts on March 19th. Why not join her?

Starting on April 20th, Kat will show you how fun and easy curves can be with Latifah Saafir's Glam Clam Pattern and Clammy Ruler.

Quilting with rulers is a wonderful way to add curved designs to your quilting repertoire. Bored with your walking foot and intimidated by full-on free motion quilting? Ruler work is an ideal compromise to create precise yet interesting stitching on your quilts using your domestic machine. In this 5-week class starting May 30th, you will make a 9-block sampler of ruler work designs.  At the end, you’ll learn a quilt-as-you-go method for joining the blocks together.

Don't forget that we offer Sandwiching Services (quilt basting) every month. Typically, four "appointments" are available each month.

We have free pillowcase kits available! We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness. Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have placemat kits available at the shop; please stop by to pick up one (or two). For those who want to sew from their stash, click on the picture for the beginner-friendly Charm Square Placemats pattern, or you can use your own pattern.

Please return all completed placemats to Capital Quilts.
Thank you for your continued support of the Capital Quilts Cares program.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available. These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disasters. To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills. To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
