Class format:
The Second Saturday Club meets on the second Saturday of every month; in 2024, the club will meet via Zoom. Each session will be recorded and made available for club members to view and download.

The Nineteen Thirty Quilt design has three parts:  the medallion center, the surrounding flower blocks and a patchwork border. For those that are looking for something to get their feet wet, the medallion center can be completed as a baby quilt, wall hanging or table topper. As given, the completed size is 66” x 66”, however those that want a larger quilt, the design can be enlarged through adding more flower blocks or increase the size of the patchwork border. You will find the design is straight forward but still manages to challenge the maker with color value choices as well as increasing skill sets such as curved piecing and applique.

The Nineteen Thirty quilt is fat quarter friendly.  How much color is your choice.  Value is important to create a colorful quilt such as the cover quilt, however the choice may be to select a one color quilt using the full spectrum of one color; or consideration may be to design a quilt using three main colors, the choice is the maker’s.  Will you be sewing from your fabric stash? Realize that you can use less fabric than listed in the pattern. You could use fewer dark value and light value fat quarters and still have enough fabric.

Nineteen Thirty

The quilt designed by Stitched in Color does not use any specialty rulers. The curved piecing in the block can be made with pattern provided printables and template making materials, or experiment with opting out of curves and making snowball corners.  Looking to slow down and savor the experience, then needle turn applique is for you.  For those that want to use their machines, raw edge and machine applique instruction will be provided.

We’ll do this project over 12 months: 1) planning, fabric choices and cutting; 2) medallion, flower block and patchwork border assembly; 3) design wall; 4) quilt top assembly; 5) quilting curves and straight line designs with a walking foot: and 6) binding and labeling.

The Club

Every club meeting includes announcements of current quilting competitions and events; review of the previous month’s tasks; discussion of the current month’s tasks; a tool-of-the-month; a show-and-tell so members can share their finished projects; and an open forum to take advantage of the hive mind as time allows. Each month, club members will tackle the design and technical challenges for one of the project. Along the way, we’ll talk about color, piecing techniques, arranging completed blocks in a satisfying pattern, and getting creative with walking-foot quilting. As an added bonus, the club has two extra, in-person private events at Capital Quilts when members can meet face-to-face, show what they’ve been working on, and shop.

Club membership is for the full year, not by the month. I hope that everyone will try at least a small version of each technique, and there will be lots of information and camaraderie to make the meetings worthwhile even if you skip a project.

The project is appropriate for confident beginners, while intermediate and advanced quilters will enjoy experimenting with different layouts and color arrangements. We’ll make finishing the quilts a priority and take the mystery out of “quilt as desired.”

Skill level: Confident beginner and up
