What's New at CQ 6/6/23

Dear Friends,

I was recently approached by a long-time customer who LOVES the Twister Tool. After speaking with her a bit, I asked if she'd teach a class on the technique, and she is game to expand her horizons into teaching! Look for the Twister Wreath class later this year.  Is there a technique, tool, or pattern in which you excel?  Are you willing to teach?  Let's chat!

Several people have asked about an Improv Quilting class.  I've reached out to several well-known instructors to see if we can schedule one. What areas of quilting do you want to see classes in, or what instructors would you like to see us bring in?

Happy Sewing!

Products

Ahoy matey! Hoist the Sails with Citrus and Mint's newest collection for Riley Blake. Inspired by local pirate lore, the designer hopes the collection encourages kids to be adventurous, and to learn history. She did lots of research for the collection–pulling out old college textbooks, reading online scholar research, and visiting the local pirate museum to check her facts. Hidden among the designs you will find historical truths from the time period, such as famous pirates (including famous female pirates!), flags of countries that ruled the Caribbean, real pirate ships, and of course pirate treasure.  Enjoy quilting with a panel and 22 coordinating nautical prints featuring pirates, treasure, and whimsical sea creatures!

Colorwash gathers several of your favorite artistic and tonal prints from Carrie Bloomston's eight collections for Windham Fabrics over the years. They've added exciting new colors for you to use to explore and express. The prints in Colorwash play well with others and act as wonderful creative blenders and off-solids.

We have new White-On-White (WOW) prints from Wilmington!  These sewing-themed backgrounds are subtle enough to be used in any quilt, but you'll know there's an extra "quilty secret" in them.  Choose from a thread toss, a pin grid, or stitched circles.

Also from WIlmington are these 10 Karat Crystals (10" Squares) of Enchantment.   This new collection from Stephanie Ryan features fresh florals in shades of blue, teal, and various greens. These came in just in time for your summer quilting projects!

Classes

Quilting with rulers is a wonderful way to add curved designs to your quilting repertoire. Bored with your walking foot and intimidated by full-on free motion quilting? Ruler work is an ideal compromise to create precise yet interesting stitching on your quilts using your domestic machine. In this 5-week class starting June 8, you will make a 9-block sampler of ruler work designs. The class will cover setting up your machine for ruler work, testing tension, and getting started. Each week you’ll make one or two blocks with practice fabric during class; between each class you’ll reproduce the blocks with your sampler fabric. At the end, you’ll learn a quilt-as-you-go method for joining the blocks together.

If you’ve always wanted to make a clamshell quilt, but were afraid of sewing all those curves, this is the answer!  Starting 6/13, Kat will show you how to use Latifah Saafir’s directions and Clammy Ruler to make super-sized clamshells that are a breeze to sew together.

We are having a Quilt of Valor Workshop on June 14th. These quilts are tremendously important to the men and women who serve our country in the military.  Help us support our vets by making a Quilt of Valor.  The group will make one quilt.  All fabric is provided.  Just bring your sewing machine, supplies, and lots of energy! Please register for either the morning or the afternoon session, as space is limited.

Do you have someone special graduating from school this year?  And do you have stacks of his or her t-shirts with school names, team names, club names, etc.?  Use them to make the perfect gift for the graduate! Debra B. shows you how starting Saturday, June 24th.

Our next session of the Complete Course of Quilting is coming up on June 25th. This 10-week quilting course teaches everything you need to know to start making your own quilts. This course covers the basics: getting to know your sewing machine, rotary cutting, fabric selection, and a variety of techniques for machine-piecing quilt blocks. You make a sampler quilt and learn to sandwich, quilt, and bind your masterpiece.

We have free pillowcase kits available!  We donate all pillowcases to Ryan's Case for Smiles, who in turn distributes them to children battling serious illness.  Pick one up next time you're in the shop, then complete it and return on your schedule. Alternately, use your stash and any of the Million Pillowcase Project patterns.

We have free small kennel quilts kits available.  These little quilts are sent to shelters who take in pets displaced by natural disaster.  To quilters, they are a great beginner project, a use for leftover fabric, and a place to practice free motion skills.  To use your stash, visit www.kennelquilts.com
